Stickpage
Encyclopedia : S : ST : STI : Stickpage
Originally created in 2002, StickPage is one of many websites devoted to Flash Animation, particularly stick figures. Interestingly, most of the stick figure animation community has died off in recent years, despite the growing trend of Flash animation. However, StickPage is still semi-frequently updated with new animations and games, mostly submitted by various members of the forums. By 2003, StickPage had a VBulletin forum and a small fan base. In 2006, a new addition to the site, a Flash portal was finally added after years of planning.
Attraction
Several of the Internet's most popular stick animations could be found on StickPage, including the popular Xiao Xiao series, and site creator Jason Whitham's own Crazy Jay series. For a time, the site was immensely popular among the stick figure animation community, although anymore it is commonly referred to as a ripoff of other sites, and the worst remaining stick site. Still, it has a loyal and dedicated fan base.Portal
Just recently, StickPage revealed their long awaited Flash [portal]. At some point in 2004, there had been plans to open a joint portal with StickSlaughter, although various problems came up which prevented the portal from opening. Eventually, in early 2006, it was announced that there would be another attempt at opening a portal, much to the delight of the [StickPage forum community]. The portal is into the Beta stage of production with many respected members currently testing it out.Community
StickPage has a small, yet loyal forum community, many of whom have been around nearly since the beginning of the site. Due to the dwindling popularity of the site, a large chunk of the StickPage community has departed, and many of those who remain have become aggressive, often sparking arguments. StickPage is more dedicated to its own forums than to the main website, as the forums feature many areas where young animators and artists may show off their talents, or compete for small prizes, such as Internet signatures. Some of the site's animations come directly from forum members.Controversy
Jason Whitham, the site's owner and administrator, has been involved in some controversy regarding animations posted on his site. Certain animators have stated that they will never again make animations for StickPage, because they claim that they were not paid for their work, and Whitham refused to take the animations off the site, despite their requests. However, this is not true, as the animations were removed from the site in due time. As well, the authors had not registered the copyrights to the animations, and therefore Jason technically did not owe them money to post the animations on his site. Just to guarantee safety, Jason now pays all contributors to his site.As well, there was a time in 2005 where the forums had to be shut down and restarted, causing everyone to have to rejoin. Considering there were more than 10,000 members on StickPage, at least a few hundred of whom were highly active, this was a significant piece of controversy. Many members believe that the site was hacked, although this was actually not the case. A member who had access to the administrative panel wrecked the site by evidently turning it into a page that merely displayed Goatse. Reasons for this are unclear; some sources will note that the member had become bored with the site, while others will say that it was a retaliation of sorts (the forums had become choked with new members, and all the moderation and administration team had seemingly vanished save for two people).
Other Stuff
Like most websites on the Internet, there are times when there is lots of activity, with quality work apperaing, and times when the work shown is questionable (such as when a "new Xiao Xiao" movie came out, which turned out to be fake and was taken off the site). For some reason, the best work appears on Stickpage forums, when school is in session (the Northern Hemisphere). During the summer, most of the work shown is questionable in quality. Of course practice makes perfect. Also with most of the members of this community under 16 years of age, it is quite impressive when a young member leaves every one in awe with their work. For a while, the first member of the StickPage community who was truly talented with ActionScript, GotSyntax121, was highly popular for his Flash games. A widespread rumor had started that one of his more popular games was being remade into a Game Boy game, although this was not actually the case. The game was known as "Bout of Cuisine," and featured Dance Dance Revolution style gameplay.
