The Stidda is a criminal organization based on the island of Sicily in Italy. It is most active in the rural parts of southern Sicily. The Stidda was formed by Cosa Nostra defecters during the Palermo Mafia war in the 1980s. The word "Stidda" is Sicilian for star. the original leaders of the Stidda were Gieseppe Croce Benvenuto and Salvatore Calafato. They may be the fastest growing crime group in Italy. In recent years the Stidda has become a competitor of Cosa Nostra. Because of relative peace within Cosa Nostra and cooperation among its clans, however, the Stidda may not remain as separated from Cosa Nostra for long. In fact, some former Stidda strongholds have already been reidentified as Cosa Nostra territory. Because members of the Stidda reject the heirarchical structure of other Italian crime groups, the Stidda may not last through another generation.
