Stone Bridge High School is a public secondary school in Ashburn, VA. It is part of Loudoun County Public Schools and is located on 43100 Hay Road. It is not to be confused with Great Bridge High School, a public high school in Chesapeake of the Hampton Roads area; StoneBridge School, a coed private K-12 Christian day school also in Chesapeake; or Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart, a Catholic K-12 girls school in Bethesda, Maryland. Stone Bridge High School serves the northwestern part of Ashburn, including the Ashburn Farm and Belmont Country Club communities; and some communities located in far eastern Leesburg, including the Lansdowne subdivision.

History

Stone Bridge opened in 2000, with its student body coming from Broad Run High School and Loudoun County High School. It was also notable that Stone Bridge opened the same year as two other Northern Virginia schools, Forest Park Senior High School opened in Prince William County, and Westfield High School opened in Fairfax County; all three schools regularly played against each other in many sports in their inaugural year.

The principal is Mr. James Person, who has been there since the school opened. During the first year, there were nearly 1,200 students from 9th through 11th grade; seniors stayed at Broad Run or Loudoun County. There were also nearly 500 8th graders housed at Stone Bridge during the 2000-2001 school year because of overcrowding at Harper Park Middle School, the feeder middle school at that time.

In 2002, all of Stone Bridge's Leesburg student body (except for Lansdowne residents) were moved to Heritage High School dropping enrollment, but some additional students from Broad Run were moved to Stone Bridge, dropping enrollment to roughly 1,400 students in the 2002-2003 school year. However, by the 2004-2005 school year, the student body went up to nearly 1,900 students, the biggest enrollment at the time for a Loudoun County high school. In 2005, Briar Woods High School's opening helped alleviate crowding, but the student body remained at above the building's capacity of 1,600 students due to the area's fast growth.

Schedule Information

Stone Bridge High School is open from 9:00 AM until 3:48 PM on all school days like the other nine Loudoun County high schools. It is notable that Loudoun County schools are open much later than neighboring jurisdictions such as Fairfax County and Prince William County where most schools open at around 7:30 AM and close between 2:00 and 2:30 PM. This is mainly due to congested traffic conditions in Loudoun County during these hours, and not due to the students' desire to "sleep in," though many students consider it a bonus.

Stone Bridge operates on an 8 period block schedule alternating each day, which are designated as A and B days. Periods 1-4 are on A days (all class periods in order); and periods 5-8 are on B days. Though there are eight periods, all students have a mandatory study hall period which is on one of these days (A/B) and periods. Some students, usually seniors who have enough credits elect to have an additional study hall, which is usually held on the other day, or if their schedule is laid out right, they may leave early from school, or come late.

Demographics

Stone Bridge High School's student body is 75% White; 9% Black; 6% Hispanic; and 9% Asian.

Test Scores

Stone Bridge High School is a fully accredited high school based on the Standards of Learning tests in Virginia since its opening in 2000. The average SAT score in 2005 for Stone Bridge High School was 1,079 (538 in Verbal; 541 in Math), a 31 point jump over their 2004 average.

Extracurricular Activities

Music

Stone Bridge has a strong band program, with three concert bands, a marching band, a jazz ensemble, and two jazz lab bands, which are full size jazz ensembles that meet before school. The band program at Stone Bridge has won many accolades over its six year history both locally and on annual tours. Stone Bridge has regularly had multiple students make the All-Virginia Band and Orchestra each year, which is comprised of the finest high school musicians in the Commonwealth.

The choir program is also made up of several groups, including a concert choir, treble choir, chamber singers, and a jazz choir which sometimes performs with the jazz ensemble. They also have won many accolades over the years and Stone Bridge regularly has students in the All-Virginia Choir annually.

Since Loudoun County Public Schools opened a string program in the middle schools in 2002 to 6th graders, Stone Bridge and the other nine Loudoun high schools now also have string ensembles starting in the 2005-2006 school year during the school day. As the string program continues to grow, as well as Loudoun County in general, there will be a full orchestra program at Stone Bridge as well.

Debate

Stone Bridge competes in the Liberty District of the Northern Region for debate competitions. These are the same districts that Stone Bridge athletics are in, because debate is sponsored by the Virginia High School League. The debate program has been very competitive recently, and won the 2005 AA Debate State title.

FBLA

Stone Bridge has a very active and dynamic Future Business Leaders of America chapter. The chapter has been named as an Honor Chapter by the Virginia FBLA since it was chartered in 2002. In 2006, the chapter was recognized with its first award from the National FBLA organization; the chapter received the Business Achievement Award due to the excellent teamwork and planning of the chapter's officers.

Athletics

The mascot is a bulldog and the sports teams currently play in the AAA Liberty District and Northern Region. Stone Bridge has won three state titles, two for cheerleading (AA champion in 2004 and AAA champion in 2005), and one AA title for girl's soccer in 2005.

Redistricting and Reclassification Controversy

Before the 2005-2006 to 2006-2007 redistricting cycle, Stone Bridge originally anticipated to play in the AA Dulles District where they have played since 2001, especially after the opening of Briar Woods High School, which is comprised almost completely of former Stone Bridge students. However, future enrollment projections determined that Stone Bridge would still be a AAA school with over 1,600 students in the 2005-2006 year. Former fellow Dulles District member Loudoun Valley was also determined to be AAA in the 2005-2007 playing cycle, and both schools were recommended to be placed in the Northern Region. Stone Bridge was placed in the Liberty District and Valley in the Concorde District.

Stone Bridge (as well as Valley) appealed the decision by petitioning to remain in the Dulles District by citing distance reasons, but the appeal was denied for both schools. Many Northern Region schools, including McLean and Jefferson were adamantly against Stone Bridge being placed in the Northern Region because of distance, and their desire to keep the Northern Region within the Fairfax County border. For a brief time, Stone Bridge and Valley were considered to be placed in the AAA Cedar Run District of the AAA Northwestern Region, but their members also did not want them because of distance reasons.

The VHSL ordered the Northern and Northwestern Regions, as well as Region II (where Stone Bridge was previously) to make a plan to allow Stone Bridge and Loudoun Valley to play in Group AAA in some form. The end result was that Valley would play in the National District as a playoff only member in all sports except football where they were full members. Stone Bridge was designated as a full member of the Liberty District instead of a playoff only member because the members are still relatively close to Stone Bridge's location.

Football

Stone Bridge is best known for their football program, which is consistently one of the strongest teams in Northern Virginia, along with Robinson, Hylton, Westfield, and Centreville. Unlike the other Northern Virginia football powerhouses, all of which are AAA, Stone Bridge did not play in Group AAA until 2005; many schools did not think the Bulldogs would be very competitive. The Bulldogs are notorious for their use of the single wing offense, which utilizes a considerable amount of option running plays by the quarterback and running backs who typically run for over 1,000 yards each every season.

2000 Season

In the 2000 football season, Stone Bridge played an independent varsity football schedule, mostly against private schools, and also against Westfield and Forest Park High Schools, which opened in 2000 along with Stone Bridge. The Bulldogs ended up with a 3-7 record, but had many close matches.

2001-2004 Seasons

In the 2001 season, the Bulldogs were favored to win the inaugural Dulles District title, but losses to Park View, Loudoun County knocked them out of playoff contention, ending with a 6-3 record, and 3-2 in the Dulles District. However, since then, Stone Bridge has made the playoffs every year, earning the AA Region II titles for AA Division 4 football in both 2002 and 2003; and winning their respective district title from 2003-2005. In the 2004 season, the Bulldogs had an undefeated regular season, but lost in the Region II finals to Harrisonburg High School.

2005 Season

In the 2005 football season, the Bulldogs won the Liberty District Title with a 7-0 district record, won the Northern Region Division 5 title, and advanced to the AAA Division 5 championship game, losing to Hampton High School 15-8. Their only other loss was on the road to fellow Northern Region member Oakton High School, who won the AAA Division 6 championship. This culminated into a 12-2 record overall.

2006 Football Season

Stone Bridge is considered by most in the Northern Virginia area as the favorite to win the 2006 Liberty District Championship and the 2006 AAA Northern Region Division 5 football title. The Bulldogs' biggest threats in the Liberty District will likely be James Madison of Vienna and Langley of McLean.

The Bulldogs will open the season with non-district rematches with West Springfield and Oakton at home, and a road contest at Valley. The Oakton match will be one of the most highly anticipated AAA regular season football matches this season.

Interesting Facts About Stone Bridge football

Cheerleading

Though football is the most popular sport at Stone Bridge, its most successful program has been its competition cheerleading team, which has enjoyed a very high level of success since 2000. In the 2000-2001 season in its first ever competition, the Bulldogs placed third in the AA Northwestern District tournament and earned the last spot to the regional tournament, despite the fact that most of its cheerleaders were not on varsity squads the year before. The Bulldogs also had a strong showing in the 2000-2001 AA Region II Cheer tournament, but were fourth place, or one spot away from the AA Cheer tournament.

Since then, Stone Bridge won five district cheerleading titles, including each of the first AA Dulles District titles from 2002-2005, as well as the 2005-2006 AAA Liberty District cheerleading title. The Bulldogs have also advanced to the AA Cheer tournament every year from the 2001-2002 to the 2004-2005 school year, earning fourth place or better out of 15 schools, including winning the 2004-2005 AA Cheer title, and in 2005-2006 won the AAA Cheer title.

The Stone Bridge High School cheerleading team is the first team to win consecutive state titles in a sport in different classifications. It is also only the second high school team to advance to a state championship game or match in consecutive years while in different classifications since at least the 2000's; the other team given the chance do so was the Cave Spring High School boys basketball team, which won the AAA title in 2001-2002, but lost the AA championship game in 2002-2003.

Many members of the Stone Bridge cheerleading team have gone on to college teams, including teams at the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech.

Ice Hockey

Stone Bridge has a varsity ice hockey team, though hockey is not a VHSL sponsored activity. However, Stone Bridge is a member of the Northern Virginia Scholastic Hockey League and in the Liberty Division, which is not affiliated or to be confused with the Liberty District.

Stone Bridge has fielded a varsity team since its opening, and has been one of the top teams in the Washington Metropolitian Area, winning the 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 NVSHL titles. The Bulldogs also were among the favorites to win the NVSHL title in the 2005-2006 school year, but lost 5-4 in the finals against Woodbridge Senior High School.

Rivalries

Stone Bridge's primary rival school is Broad Run High School, which is about two miles away. Though both schools are currently in different VHSL districts, they still regularly play against each other in most sports, a notable exception being football.

Stone Bridge also has had rivalries with other Loudoun County schools, such as Park View for football and Loudoun County for girls' basketball when it was a AA school. Since their reclassification to Group AAA, Stone Bridge does not have a true rival in the Liberty District, because most of the schools in the Northern Region have been established there for many years and already enjoy very strong rivalries.

However because Stone Bridge has already enjoyed success in AAA in its inaugural season, other established Northern Region programs are looking forward to challenge the Bulldogs for years to come.
