"Streets of Love" / "Rough Justice" was the debut double A-side single from The Rolling Stones' 2005 album A Bigger Bang. It was released on August 22 2005 (see 2005 in music).
"Streets of Love," a gaudy power ballad with a spare, guitar-based arrangement and an abrasive falsetto chorus, received the main marketing push, though it failed to become a major hit in either the U.S. or the UK. By contrast, it went to number one in Italy and enjoyed top ten success in France, Germany, Argentina, and other countries. The vigorous, rock-oriented "Rough Justice," similarly structured around a big anthemic chorus and featuring several prominent slide guitar solos, served as the lead-off track and signature tune for the A Bigger Bang album.
"Streets of Love" is one of the few Rolling Stones songs licensed for use in advertising (See "Start Me Up"). It is heard in a television commercial for mobile telephony provider Vodafone in Italy, in which the company's spokes-model Megan Gale also appears. The video for this song was shot at Zaphod Beeblebrox, a nightclub in Ottawa, Canada. It was debuted live on July 11th 2006 in San Siro, Italy, just outside of Milan.
"Rough Justice" was one of three songs played by the Rolling Stones at half time during the Super Bowl XL in 2006. Along with "Start Me Up," Mick Jagger allegedly omitted ostensibly objectionable words from the song. It was later revealed that the volume on Jagger's mic had not been turned down at points, without the singer's prior permission, but instead Jagger had agreed to leave out lines that were found offensive.
