Strong cryptography

Encyclopedia : S : ST : STR : Strong cryptography

Strong cryptography is a general term for cryptography that is extremely resilient to cryptanalysis. PGP is one well-known example, while Gnupg is a popular open source implementation that runs under Windows and Linux. Since its use makes the job of intelligence agencies much more difficult, many countries have laws restricting or outright banning the private use of strong crypto. The United States has restricted the export of cryptography since World War II, and Russia has completely banned its use by private individuals.
