Students Federation of India is one of the major student organisations in India and even the world. SFI is politically linked to the Communist Party of India (Marxist). SFI was founded in 1970. Its Member Strength is currently around 3.6 Million. "Student Struggle" is the official nation monthly magazine brought out by SFI and is in English, currently edited by Comrade Rhitobroto Banerjee. Apart from this there are many magazines brought out by the state committees in the corresponding regional language. "Chhatra Sangram" is the Magazine in Bengali.
It has a strong base in the University of Calcutta, Led By Com. Zaad Mahmood, and Com. Durjoy Roy.
The All India Secretary of this Organiztion is Com. K. K. Ragesh, and the President is Com. R. Arunkumar, while Com. Sudip Sengupta and Com. Apurba Chatterjee are the President and Secretary of the state it has its strongest hold, West Bengal.
Though SFI has activities throughout the country, it is prominent in student politics in West Bengal, Kerala and Tripura. It has a few other strongholds which include Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla and Hyderabad Central University.
The Student's Federation of India has an overall membership of about thirty six lakh students, across India with about a lakh and half in Tamil Nadu.
In Tripura there is a special suborganisation for tribal students, Tribal Students Union.
