Students for Environmental Action, or SEA is part of the network of Global Organisation of Students for Environmental Action. It was formed in September if 1997 at the vision of an international charter for the Environment by Students (VOICES)Conference in Istanbul. SEA has a constitution which was adopted from the VOICES charter which comprises 20 principles ranging from Education to Personal value, Equity to wealth, and from networking to fun. SEA is working on campus greening. This includes the introduction of recycled paper and energy saving garbage prevention, vegetation inventory and climate change.

Objectives of SEA Establishing programs to produce expertise in the environmental management, sustainable development, resource conservation and related fields to ensure that all university graduates are environmentally literate and have the awareness and understanding to be ecologically responsible citizens.

Goals of SEA Our goal is to expose the youth to environmental issues in the region and make them responsive to these issues by equipping them with the necessary environmental education tools and techniques. The youth at large will be able to create an interdisciplinary network of environmental experts at the local, national and international level in order to disseminate knowledge and to collaborate on common environmental projects in both research and education in the following categories:

Schools Colleges Universities Community groups Vocational centers Church youth By setting an example of environmental responsibility through the establishment of institutional ecology policies, SEA seeks to forge ahead with the objectives of the Halifax Declaration, 1991 of which Zimbabwe is a signatory. Our main objectives are:

Environmental education of the society. This is achieved by utilizing the intellectual resources of the University by building strong research programs related to sustainable development and to overcome traditional barriers between disciplines and departments. To raise public, government, industry, and the university awareness by openly addressing the urgent need to move towards environmentally aware attitudes, skills and behavior patterns, as well as a sense of ethical responsibility. Participation in environmental audits. Forming a coalition with other concerned sectors of society, in order to design and implement coordinated approaches, strategies and action plans.

IMPLEMENTATION The following strategies have been developed for the implementation of SEA strategies and action plan· Organizing seminars and workshops for environmental education· Developing material to augment interactive education methodology· Fostering liaison with environmental organizations and other projects to enhance environmental awareness opportunities countrywide and in the region· The utilization of the information super highway to capture the latest trends in global environmental issues.
