Subprefectures of Japan

Some Japanese prefectures are divided into branch offices. Called 支庁 (shichō) in Japanese, this word is often translated into English as "subprefecture". Normally area of a subprefecture consists of a few to a dozen of cities, towns, and/or villages.

- There are 14 subprefectures in Hokkaido.
- There are 4 subprefectures in Tokyo Prefecture.
- There are 4 subprefectures in Yamagata Prefecture.
- There are 3 subprefecturea in Nagasaki Prefecture.
- There are 2 subprefectures in Okinawa Prefecture.
- There are 2 subprefectures in Kagoshima Prefecture.
- There is 1 subprefecture in Miyazaki Prefecture.
- There is 1 subprefecture in Shimane Prefecture.
