Subterranean (TV series)

Encyclopedia : S : SU : SUB : Subterranean (TV series)

right Subterranean is a weekly music show on MTV2 dedicated to alternative, indie, and underground music and artists. The show was made as the modern-day continuation of MTV's 120 Minutes. The show is hosted by MTV2 VJ Jim Shearer.

Every week, an alternative artist or band is Jim Shearer's special guest for an interview, and music videos by that band and other indie artists are played. During each one-hour episode, an average of nine music videos are played.

Time slot

Subterranean originally aired Friday nights at 12 a.m. ET, but now normally airs on Sunday nights at 1 a.m. ET (technically Monday morning). However, during most three-day weekends in the United States with a Monday holiday, MTV2 will bump the show from its time slot and push its airtime about four hours back, which many fans of the show consider frustrating.

Other fans of the show have claimed that the 1 a.m. ET time slot is inconvenient for people in the Eastern and Central time zones; on the west coast, the show airs at 10 p.m. PT.

Format

About 10 minutes before Subterranean begins, a short commercial with Jim Shearer airs in which he informs viewers about the upcoming special guest and talks about some of the videos that will be shown. When the show starts, Shearer will repeat most of the information in the commercial, and then introduce the first music video of the show.

Usually after the first video, MTV2 will play a "shart," which is a short, random video clip, and then play the second music video. Two or three music videos are shown in a row between commercial breaks.

After about 25 minutes into the show, Shearer will introduce the guest and begin the interview. Following the next segment, a music video by the special guest artist or band is played (usually their newest video or a premiere). The rest of the show features another interview segment, the final video, and the closing credits.
