Sugarland (band)

Encyclopedia : S : SU : SUG : Sugarland (band)

Sugarland is a country music duo. Originally, the group consisted of three singer/songwriters from the Atlanta area: lead singer Jennifer Nettles along with Kristen Hall, and Kristian Bush. In early 2006 Kristen Hall left the group; Nettles and Bush continue as Sugarland without her.

Early careers

All three members were well-known members of Atlanta's folk/acoustic/rock scene in the 1990s and early 2000s. They played frequently at Eddie's Attic in Decatur, Georgia, which Nettles' husband owned for a time. Nettles graduated from Agnes Scott College in Decatur, and played with Soul Miner's Daughter (the name is an allusion to her father's occupation as a minister). Bush played with Billy Pilgrim, and Hall had a solo career that often crossed paths with the Indigo Girls.

Sugarland success

Sugarland has received more mainstream national attention than any of the three members had as solo performers.

The group has released five singles, "Baby Girl," "Something More," "Just Might (Make Me Believe)," "Stand Back Up," and "Down In Mississippi (Up To No Good)," which have received extensive radio play, and the group's first album, Twice the Speed of Life, has sold over 1.9 million copies, earning it a 2x platinum designation.

In late 2005, the band performed with Bon Jovi on Country Music Television's musical fusion show, Crossroads; Nettles sings with Bon Jovi on their single, "Who Says You Can't Go Home."

The group toured the United States and Canada performing with Brad Paisley in 2005 and will tour in 2006 with Brooks and Dunn.

The group was nominated for the Best New Artist Grammy and performed the song "Something More" at the 48th Annual Grammy Awards in February 2006.

Trio becomes duo

On Tuesday, January 17th, 2006, Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush released a statement on the official Sugarland [website] stating that "Kristen [Hall] has decided that she wants to stay home and write songs, and we support her in that decision."

Busch and Nettles are scheduled to release a new album this fall.
