His father Tony Frangieh was murdered by his allies who tried to take over his renowned Zgharta based Marada Brigade. Suleiman Franjieh II was at his grandfather’s house when his father, mother and sister were murdered in their summer retreat in Ehden at 4am. Suleiman was around 5 years old when his family was killed, he was bought up by his grandfather and his paternal uncle. He would have been killed if he was not with his grand father that night. The cowardly attack divided the United Lebanese front and the Kataeb failed to take over the Marada Brigades of the north. After the death of his father, his grandfather who had always been considerably pro Syrian; a relationship that goes back to a time before Hafez Al Assad had become president of Syria, he had also now lost any association he previously had with his sons murderers. The Kataeb denied carrying out the killing. Suleiman Frangieh Jr who inherited a lot of his families powerful political status has been in several positions of power in Lebanese politics, he more recently became Minister of the Interior from 2004 to 2005. His career was considered reasonably successful and was seen by his supporters as a generous person and a tough politician who did not change sides like many other Lebanese politicians. Suleiman is very popular in North Lebanon, especially in the Zgharta District. He also is popular in Southern Lebanon and Beirut. Recently Suleiman II has sided with Michel Aoun.
