Sullivan Arena

Encyclopedia : S : SU : SUL : Sullivan Arena

The Sullivan Arena is a 8,700-seat multi-purpose arena in Anchorage, Alaska. The arena opened in 1983. It is home to the Alaska Aces ECHL ice hockey team, the University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves hockey team (WCHA), and the Great Alaska Shootout basketball tournament. In 2007 it will be home to the Alaska Wild arena football team of the af2. It is also frequently used for touring rock and country concert acts, although it is often criticized for its poor acoustics. Touring jazz artists typically use the much smaller but acoustically excellent Evangeline Atwood Concert Hall at the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts.

The arena is named after former Anchorage mayor George M. Sullivan. It is owned by the Municipality of Anchorage and operated by SMG, a nationwide property management company.

Lyle Woods is the public address announcer for UAA home games.

For hockey games, the Sullivan Arena seats 6,406, and is known for its international-specification ice (61 m × 30 m / 200 ft × 98.5 ft) instead of the more traditional NHL specifications (200 ft × 85 ft / 61 m × 25.9 m). The Alaska Aces sometimes make 200 additional standing-room-only tickets available.
