SummerSlam 2002 was the fifteenth annual SummerSlam professional wrestling pay-per-view event from the World Wrestling Entertainment. It took place on August 25, 2002 in the Nassau Coliseum located in Uniondale, New York.

This was the first SummerSlam event to be held after the introduction of the brand extension.

Results

  • SmackDown! brand - Kurt Angle def. Rey Mysterio
  • *Angle reversed Mysterio's Hurricanrana into an ankle lock, forcing Rey to submit. (9:20)
  • RAW brand - Ric Flair def. Chris Jericho
  • *Flair won by submission, forcing Jericho to tap out to the figure four leglock. (10:30)
  • **Controversy was made when Jericho had Flair earlier in his own figure four leglock. Flair held onto the rope with one hand but tapped out with the other. The referee let the match continue.
  • SmackDown! brand - Edge def. Eddie Guerrero
  • *Edge pinned Guerrero after nailing the Spear. (11:54)

  • Interpromotional - WWE Intercontinental Championship match: Rob Van Dam (RAW) def. Chris Benoit (c) (SmackDown!)
  • *Rob Van Dam pinned Benoit after hitting a Five-Star Frog Splash. (16:30)
  • **Benoit had defeated RVD on a previous episode of RAW and defected to the SmackDown! brand. A contract found by general manager Eric Bischoff enabled this interpromotional match being made.
  • **RAW comentators Jim Ross and Jerry "The King" Lawler were calling the matches while RAW ring announcer Howard Finkel and SmackDown! ring announcer Tony Chimel announced their respective wrestlers.
  • **Rob Van Dam's victory brought the WWE Intercontinental Championship back to RAW.
  • RAW brand - The Undertaker def. Test
  • *Undertaker pinned Test after hitting a Tombstone Piledriver. (8:18)
  • **Lance Storm and Christian tried to interfere but ended up getting chokeslammed by The Undertaker.
  • **After the match, Undertaker waved the flag of the United States.

  • RAW brand - Unsanctioned match: Shawn Michaels def. Triple H
  • *Shawn Michaels won after reversing Triple H's Pedigree attempt into a cradle. (27:19)
  • **Shawn Michaels made his return to the ring, making this his first WWE match since WrestleMania XIV.
  • **HBK hit Triple H with a diving elbow drop off a ladder.
  • **Michaels also hit a plancha onto Triple H through a table.
  • **After the match, HHH struck HBK with his sledgehammer numerous times, sending Michaels on a stretcher.
