Sumy (Ukrainian: Суми, Russian: ) is a city on the Psel River in the Ukraine, and the capital of the Sumy Oblast. Sumy is a twin town of Celle, Germany since January 17, 1990. As of 2004, the city's population is 283,700.

History

Sumy was founded in 1652 at the river Psel (a left tributary of the Dnieper) as fortress. At the time, Sumy was always in the threat of attack from Crimean Tatars. Starting from the end of the 18th Century, the city an important economical center. During the German occupation of Ukraine during World War II (1941 - 1943), Sumy was heavily damaged. However a church was spared destruction. After the end of WWII the destroyed parts of the city were rebuilt anew.
