Encyclopedia : S : SU : SUN : Sunrise At Campobello

Sunrise at Campobello is a 1960 film which tells the story of the struggle by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt against polio. Set at the Roosevelt family's summer home on Campobello Island, New Brunswick, it stars Ralph Bellamy, Greer Garson, Hume Cronyn and Jean Hagen.

The film was based on a Tony Award winning Broadway play of the same name by Dore Schary. Written and produced by Schary, it was directed by Vincent J. Donehue.

It was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Actress in a Leading Role (Greer Garson), Best Art Direction-Set Decoration, Color, Best Costume Design, Color and Best Sound.

Actually, Roosevelt probably did not have polio. A peer-reviewed study published in 2003,Goldman, AS et al, [What was the cause of Franklin Delano Roosevelt's paralytic illness?]. J Med Biogr. 11: 232-240 (2003) using Bayesian analysis, found that six of eight posterior probabilities favored a diagnosis of Guillain-Barré syndrome (an autoimmune peripheral neuropathy) over poliomyelitis.
