In the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks, NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue announced the idea of holding Super Bowl XLII in either New York City or Washington, D.C. as a way of helping both areas rebuild economically. However, New York City was not even considered as a finalist because:
- The proposed renovations to Giants Stadium were still being disputed among its stadium representatives.
- At the time, New York City and the New York Jets still had not finalized a plan to build the new West Side Stadium (Ultimately, the deal fell through).
Trivia
- This will be the second time that the Phoenix, Arizona area will host a Super Bowl game. Super Bowl XXX took place in nearby Tempe's Sun Devil Stadium.
