Super Paper Mario
Encyclopedia : S : SU : SUP : Super Paper Mario
Super Paper Mario is a video game currently in development by Intelligent Systems, a division of Nintendo. It will be released on the Nintendo GameCube. Similar to the previous two Paper Mario titles, the game will combine side-scrolling 2D gameplay with 3D graphics and, to a lesser extent, RPG elements (unlike the RPG-style gameplay of previous Paper Mario games.)
However, Super Paper Mario may possibly be a different series than the previous Paper Mario Titles, suggested by the word "Super" in the title, and the fact that it isn't an RPG.
Gameplay
Super Paper Mario will be the second Paper Mario game to feature side-scrolling platforming gameplay ( featured three platforming levels for Bowser during its story); Mario, Peach, and Bowser will each be available as playable characters, and the player may be able to swap between characters at any time during a level.Characters and Abilities
The E3 trailer showcased several new abilities and power-ups, one of which is a space helmet: Mario is seen floating in mid-air while shooting enemies with a ray gun, and also running sideways down a wall.
Each playable character will have different character traits, as well as a special character-related move. For example:
- Mario - Mario's special move turns the world 90° for a limited time when you press R, allowing you to play in a 3 dimensional enviroment. This reveals hidden objects invisible in 2 dimensional mode.
- Princess Peach - Being the lightest, Peach can jump the highest, and similar to her move in Super Princess Peach, can use a parasol to glide large distances while floating slowly towards the ground. It's unknown if she also uses it to attack enemies like in the aforementioned game.
- Bowser - The largest, heaviest, and slowest-moving character out of the three. Bowser retains his ability to breathe fire, which does more damage than a normal attack.
Power ups
- Mushrooms: In Mario RPG fashion, Mushrooms increase the player's health (as opposed to traditional side-scrolling Mario games, where the Mushroom increased the character's size).
- Starmen: Starmen make the character grow to immense size (similar to the Mega Mushroom in New Super Mario Bros.), allowing them to crash through the level, effectively invincible. Amusingly, they turn into 8-bit sprites when this happens.
- Red Flowers: Instead of allowing the player to shoot fireballs, they make the player move faster.
- Blue Flowers: The opposite of a Red Flower; these make the player move more slowly.
Companions
During the trailer, Mario is seen with two companions floating around with him. It was revealed that these were called Fairens. The first, which looks like a butterfly, works somewhat like Goombella from , or Goombario from Paper Mario and provides information about the level; the second provides special abilities, such as picking up and throwing enemies.Enemies
The trailer has shown that staple Mario enemies, such as Goombas, Koopa Troopas, Hammer Bros. and so on, will make a return appearance in the game, although two new enemies, a purple square with a beak, and a blue version of said enemy, have appeared so far. Also, there appears to be a boss based off of a chinese dragon, where you have to play as Mario, change to 3-D view, jump on the monster's back when he charges at you, grab the enemies on his back and throw them at his antenna.[link] There also seems to be some sort of mummy boss, a big-headed chomping boss and a giant blooper boss, as seen in these screenshots, respectively. Story
No details about the story have been announced as of yet. However, preview screenshots have depicted a marriage ceremony between Peach and Bowser, being overseen by what appears to be some sort of evil magician. This suggests that Bowser kidnapped Peach to marry her. (Although, as Bowser is a playable character, the magician might be the true villain.)
Because of the nature of some screenshots, it has been speculated that Mario may be in some kind of cyber-world, perhaps a video game. The companions he is seen with resemble computer graphics of some sort, and - in one world - various "code" can be seen in the sky when Mario turns a certain way, suggesting that he isn't in an actual world. Additionally, some gameplay videos show a cursor appearing and drawing a box around Mario, Bowser, or Peach whenever the player wants to flip the perspective or switch to another character. Such has not been confirmed, however, but should likely be noted.
Development
Super Paper Mario will utilize the same paper theme as in previous Paper Mario titles, with minor changes. There are also eight worlds in all.Release
The game is scheduled for release on October 9th, 2006.References
