Super Princess Peach
Encyclopedia : S : SU : SUP : Super Princess Peach
is a 2D platform video game for the Nintendo DS, set in the Mario universe, starring Princess Peach. In contrast to the usual game scenario of the princess being captured by Bowser, in this game Mario, Luigi, and several Toads have been captured by use of a magic wand that controls emotions, and Peach is the only one able to rescue them. Using her four emotion-based powers (Joy, Calm, Rage and Gloom), she can fight off enemies and solve puzzles. A magical, talking parasol named Perry (Kassā in Japanese) accompanies her in the game and has multiple uses. The game features numerous classic Mario enemies, such as Goombas, Koopa Troopas, Hammer Brothers, and so forth. In a twist some of the enemies are also emotionally affected, such as the sad blue Goombas or the Bullet Bills burning red with anger.
Gameplay
The DS touch screen displays the four moods: joy, gloom, rage and calm. Tapping on a mood activates different abilities, which typically helps solve puzzles or defeat enemies. However, each emotion you use drains your emotion meter (little yellow squiggle at upper left of the top screen). Some abilities are:- Calm: Peach calms down, gets very happy and restores life. (Green Heart)
- Gloom: Peach will cry, making her run faster, or to make plants grow for her to climb up to high places. (Blue Heart)
- Rage: Peach will get very mad and catch fire, making her invincible and able to ground pound. (Red Heart)
- Joy: Peach will sing, dance and gets very happy, making her fly. (Yellow Heart)

She has the ability to form freezing projectiles, create a forcefield made of ice, and turn her enemies into an icicle. Her mammoth body also makes her quite powerful, and she uses her strength to stomp and charge around. Her real form is that of a devious fairy -- though she normally uses her dragon form to battle. While in her true form, she has a wand that controls the ice around her.
Reception
Super Princess Peach currently has an aggregate rating of 76% on Game Rankings. [Super Princess Peach Reviews]. Game Ranking. Retrieved July 9, 2006.The game was praised for being the first 2D Nintendo platformer in several years. It was also praised for "turning the tables" by having the usual damsel-in-distress save the usual hero and for starring Princess Peach in the main role instead of being a secondary character.
The game's difficutly was intensely criticized. GameSpy noted that the number of shop items and the "Joy" vibe made it "quite hard to die" Williams, Bryn. [GameSpy: Super Princess Peach Review]. GameSpy. February 27, 2006. IGN was more critical, critcizing Nintendo for "going out of its way" to "spoon-feed" the player full of tips and information. Harris, Craig. [IGN: Super Princess Peach Review]. IGN. February 23, 2006. Ryan Davis from GameSpot similarly wrote that the game was "way too easy for the average platformer player." Ryan, Davis.[Super Princess Peach for DS Review]. GameSpot. February 24, 2006. X-Play's Morgan Webb also commented that the game was very easy to play and should be played by first timers to platformers. Most reviewers concluded that the difficulty was due to Nintendo's intentions, aiming and marketing the game at a more casual, female crowd instead.
The nature of the vibes and Nintendo's marketing campaign was also noted in many reviews. Ryan Davis accused Nintendo of putting "weird sexist undercurrents" into the game , while Bryn Williams wondered if Nintendo was trying to say that all females were "emo." Craig Harris from IGN said that the game came in a box scented with perfume.
