Susan

Encyclopedia : S : SU : SUS : Susan

Susan is a female given name, a form of Susanna, deriving originally from Middle Egyptian "ssnn" (lotus flower), first reported on a 11.Dyn. sarcophagus approximately 2000 B.C. There is also a similar Hebrew word for lily. Common nicknames for Susan include Sue, Sukie, and Susie, Suzie or Sanna.

Connected with this is Susa, an ancient city of Persia. It is said to derive its name from the lilies which abounded in the plain in which it was situated, susan, or shusan being the Persian word for lily.
