The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation is a foundation created to support breast cancer research. The Komen Foundation hosts thousands of events around the country. It is made up of volunteers and cancer survivors alike, sharing a common goal in publicising the risk of breast cancer. The Foundation is a major non-profit funder for breast cancer research, with a network of over 100 affiliates in the United States, Italy, Germany and Puerto Rico.
History
The Komen Breast Cancer Foundation was founded in 1982. Susan G. Komen asked her sister, Nancy Brinker, soon before her death, to bring an end to breast cancer. The Komen Foundation was formed in response to this promise and to commemorate all of those who have died of the disease.Research funding
The Komen Breast Cancer Foundation provides generous funding to breast cancer research. Since its inception in 1982, the Foundation has awarded more than 1,000 breast cancer research grants totaling more than $180 million. The Foundation remains the world's largest private provider of funds for breast cancer research and community outreach programs.Fundraising events
