Dr. Susan Lewis, played by Sherry Stringfield, is a fictional doctor on the television show ER.
In the first season, we see Susan as an eager and competent young doctor working in the emergency department of County General Hospital. She battles, however, to stay focused on her work due to the various problems in her personal life, which is far less settled than her professional one. She has a brief relationship with psychiatrist Dr. Div Svetick, but he has various problems and disappears (Susan later learns that he married someone he met through a taxi driver who ran a dating agency out of his cab).
Most of her problems, however, are caused by her younger sister, Chloe Lewis, who, unlike Susan, is constantly getting herself into trouble with alcohol, drugs and men; and is constantly disappearing for months on end. Chloe has a baby by one of her boyfriends, which she names Susan ("Little Susie") after her older sister. During season 2, Chloe disappears again, leaving Little Susie behind, and it is only months later, when Susan has just become used to being a mother to the baby, and is in the process of adopting her, that Chloe re-appears.
Chloe moves to Phoenix, Arizona; taking Little Susie with her; and when Susan visits them during a holiday she realises she wants to move with them. She leaves her residency in season 3 episode 8 (Union Station) to do this; much to the utter dismay of Mark Greene, her best friend, who had just plucked up the courage to tell her that he was actually in love with her. He runs to catch her at the train station, and they share a kiss, but she leaves anyway, shouting back "I love you too!" as the train departs.
Susan returns during season 8, looking for a job in Chicago - she reveals that Chloe has moved on, and she realises that she can't follow her sister's family around forever. She comes into the ER to meet Mark Greene for coffee, and there is obvious tension between her and his wife Elizabeth Corday. Mark offers her a job as an attending physician at County General, despite Kerry Weaver's reservations - the two never got on when they worked together in earlier season.
During season 8, she has several storylines. She has a brief relationship with Dr. John Carter after they both admit that they had a crush on each other when he was a medical student and she was a resident - it doesn't last, however, as Susan realises that Carter is really in love with Abby Lockhart. Her problems with Chloe resurface when she goes missing, Susan flies to New York and discovers Chloe doped up, sleeping rough, having misplaced Little Susie. Susan faces one of her biggest hurdles, however, when Mark reveals to her that his cancer has returned - the two rekindle their closeknit friendship as she helps him come to term with his diagnosis.
Lewis met a flight nurse named Chuck Martin when she was on a plane ride to Las Vegas. They both got drunk upon arrival and ended up getting married in Vegas. Both Lewis and Martin annulled their marriage once they got back to Chicago. After not seeing one another for awhile, they started dating again, and Lewis ended up getting pregnant. She had a baby boy, whom they named Cosmo. Lewis continued to work at the hospital while Martin is a stay-at-home father, becoming Chief of emergency medicine after Robert Romano's death.
She left the show again in season 12, to take up a tenure spot (which she had been denied at County General) in Iowa.
