Sustainable transport

Encyclopedia : S : SU : SUS : Sustainable transport

Sustainable transport is a phrase which was coined in the late 20th century to describe all forms of transport which minimise emissions of carbon dioxide and pollutants. Sustainable transport can mean public transport, car sharing, walking and cycling as well as technology such as electric and hybrid cars and biodiesel. The term is based on the phrase sustainable development. Basically, the term encompasses a wide array of economical, social and environmental effects that should be taken into account when developing new transport policy and/or projects in cities. In particular the phrase has been adopted by environmental campaign groups and the British and Australian national and local governments, though both the phrase and the concepts have now spread around the world.
