Suvarnadurg

Encyclopedia : S : SU : SUV : Suvarnadurg

Suvarnadurg (also spelt in England as Severndroog) is an island fortress near Harnai in Konkan, along the western coast of India, between Mumbai and Goa.

The fort was built by Shivaji, initially to counter the Siddi, but was also used as a defence against European interests and was a base for the Maratha navy's ship-building facility.

In the mid-18th century, the fortress became the base of the notorious pirate Tulaji Angre (also spelt Tollagee Angria; son of privateer Kanhoji Angre), but was attacked and destroyed by a force led by William James on 2 April 1755.
