Swarm (Transformers)

The Swarm is a creature in the fictional world of the Transformers: Generation 2 comic by Marvel Comics.
The Swarm is a large, amorphous, black mass of insect-type creatures that travels from planet to planet, seeking out robotic lifeforms. Upon contact with robots, the Swarm devours them, leaving behind only empty, lifeless husks. Organic lifeforms are safe, as the Swarm does not even consider them life.
The final issue of the Generation 2 comic dealt with the encounter between the Swarm and the Transformers on Earth. Optimus Prime had discovered the secret behind the Swarm, lost for millions of years: Immediately after Primus had first created Cybertron, Transformers were able to reproduce like organic beings, by somehow oozing a new proto-Transformer from their bodies. Later, however, the Transformers forgot how to reproduce this way, and had to resort to building new Transformers from mechanical parts. The Swarm was a by-product of the original organic-style reproduction, kind of a distillation of the Decepticon drive to conquer and consume everything.
The swarm was given a purpose by being exposed to the powers of the Creation Matrix. Instead of a force for the destruction of life, it had become a force for the creation of life. The only, but best example of this is when the swarm created Optimus Prime again, as a parting gift. Eventually, the Swarm are believed to have evolved into the species known as the Vok.
