Sylvia Rivera Law Project

Encyclopedia : S : SY : SYL : Sylvia Rivera Law Project

The Sylvia Rivera Law Project was formed in August 2002 by attorney and transgender civil rights activist, Dean Spade. The project was named for Sylvia Rivera, a transgender activist and veteran of the 1969 Stonewall Uprising who died the same year that SRLP was formed.

Structure and Propose

SRLP is a collective organization that is based on the principle that gender self-determination is inextricably intertwined with racial, social and economic justice. So in particular the organization seeks to empower and increase the visibility of people of color, incarcerated people, people with disabilities, people with HIV/AIDS, immigrants, homeless people, youth, and people trying to access public benefits who are transgender, intersex, or gender non-conforming. SRLP specifically seeks to increase access to respectful and affirming social, health, and legal services for these groups.

SRLP pursues these goals both through public policy, advocacy, education, and the provision of direct services for transgender, intersex, and gender non-conforming people.
