T-money is a prepaid card used to take the subway, the bus, and often the taxi. A recent service, it can also be used for buying small items at small stores that have the T-money mark. T-money cards come in various designs, but they are used in the same way. A rider of the Seoul Metropolitan Subway system simply brings his or her bag containing the card up to the card-reader and the cost of the ride is deducted from the card. The card itself costs 2500 won, and afterwards one can "recharge" the card when necessary. If the card malfunctions it is possible to bring it to a convenience store and fill out a form with one's bank account number to receive the 2500 won back. T-money can be recharged in subway stations, either automatically or by the person working behind the counter. Other places to recharge it include convenience stores and other places where the T-money sign is shown.
Various T-money card designsT-money cards can also be recharged at subway stations automatically. Place the card in the open area left of the buttons and once the machine detects the card one will be able to select a monetary amount such as 10,000 won to add to the card. After hitting the button, insert the money, wait for a second or two until it tells you that the card has been recharged, and you are done.
The life of a T-money card seems to be only somewhere around half a year if it is constantly being moved. After a certain amount of use the card may stop functioning so it is wise to keep it in an area where it will not have to be removed and re-inserted frequently, causing scratching.
