The Travel Information Highway or TIH for short, is an open and independent association of Information Publishers and Receivers in the UK who have an interest in exchanging travel information using an agreed set of Principles.
The aim of TIH is to facilitate the process of exchanging travel information amongst organisations to make better use of their resources and networks. To this end it has been important to draw as widely as possible on the experiences and views of the community.
Organisation
To progress the effort and put some structure into it, the TIH organisational structure includes the TIH Forum, the TIH Working Groups, the Management Group Secretariat and the Management Group Executive.
The Travel Information Community
The Travel Information Community is a collection of organisations involved with traffic and travel information. Amongst these are the Local Highways Authorities (UTMC), Media, the English Highways Agency ([National Traffic Control Centre] for England), Police, Strategic Network Operators, Public Transport Operators, Strategic Traffic Generators and Information Services Providers.TIH Executive
The TIH Executive comprises representatives of the TIH Community responsible for coordinating and managing the activities of the Working Groups to ensure that the Community’s needs and requirements continue to be met.The TIH Exec’s objective is to review the ongoing needs of the TIH Community in terms of recommended TIH Principles and ensure there are mechanisms in place to make them happen.
The Executive Group meets frequently and has the ability to develop the role of TIH Principles effectively within the travel information community.
Additionally it is the role of the Exec to provide guidance on the future development of TIH in terms of technical and business development.
TIH Working Group Champion
Each working group is led by a Working Group Champion, who is an acknowledged expert in their particular field. S/he will initiate or lead discussions within the working groups investigating developments and emerging standards. The WG Champions will, when appropriate, produce submissions that update the TIH Principles Document.TIH Working Groups
Anyone with a particular interest in an area of investigation can join a working group by contacting the relevant WG Champion. The effort takes the form of an email discussion using a private mailing list. The main task of a working group is to keep abreast of current developments and emerging standards within their sphere of interest and to assess any impact of these on the TIH and the TIH Principles.
As working groups provide the basis of the TIH Principles, the areas of investigation must reflect the Community’s needs. The TIH Executive may therefore ask for Working Groups to be created, have their focus changed or be disbanded altogether depending on the prevailing direction of the TIH development.
