TSG Hoffenheim is a German football club, located in Sinsheim, Baden-Württemberg. The modern day club was formed in 1945 when gymnastics club TV Hoffenheim (founded 1899) and football club FV Hoffenheim (founded 1921) merged. Therefore 1899 is the formally recognized founding date of the club. The club was essentially an obscure local amateur side, until around 1999, when alumnus Dietmar Hopp got re-involved with the club. Hopp, the co-founder of software firm SAP put some financial muscle into the club of his youth, and his contributions were reflected in the results almost immediately. Between 1999 and 2001 the club rose from the 5th division to the 3rd division Regionalliga Süd where they have remained to the present time. Since 2003 the club has never finished lower than 7th in the Regionalliga Süd, and had its best result to date in 2005/06 with a 4th place finish. TSG Hoffenheim has shown it has higher ambitions for the future. In 2006, the club hired former Hannover 96 and Schalke 04 manager Ralf Rangnick. In addition, the club leadership unveiled plans to build a new 30000 seat stadium in Heidelberg.
