TVBS
Encyclopedia : T : TV : TVB : TVBS
TVBS is a satellite television channel in Taiwan. It was established by Television Broadcasts Internatonal Limited (TVBI) (headquartered in Hong Kong, China), a partnership of Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB) in Hong Kong, and ERA Group of Taiwan, and became the wholly-owned subsidiary of Television Broadcasts Limited of Hong Kong in early 2005. Because this status violated Republic of China media ownership laws (requiring that all media corporations be majority-owned by indigenous individuals or corporations), on November 1, 2005, the ROC Government Information Office head Pasuya Wen-chih Yao announced a fine of NT$1 million against TVBS and ordered that it comply with the ownership rules in a practical timeframe. However, in the media, this was viewed by some as an attempt to intimidate TVBS from constantly criticizing the Democratic Progressive Party and the government led by President Chen Shui-bian.
TVBS was first broadcast on 28 September, 1993.
