The SAE J2012 standard defines a number of generic OBD-II Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs), which fall into one of the following categories:
- Powertrain (P) DTCs
- Body (B) DTCs
- Chassis (C) DTCs
- Network (U) DTCs
