Tackey and Tsubasa

Encyclopedia : T : TA : TAC : Tackey and Tsubasa

Hideaki Takizawa (滝沢秀明, Takizawa Hideaki born March 29th, 1982 in Tokyo, Japan) and Tsubasa Imai (今井翼, Imai Tsubasa born October 17th, 1981 in Fujisawa, Japan) form the very popular Johnny & Associates group Tackey & Tsubasa (タッキー&翼). Takizawa, "Tackey" for short, is best known for his drama works, and Tsubasa for his dancing ability. They have many hit music singles, among them "One Day, One Dream", one of the opening themes and "Sotsugyou ~Sayonara wa Ashita no Tame ni~", an insert song for the widely popular anime cartoon "InuYasha".

A good example of their popularity is the release of their 2006 single, "Venus", that debuted at #1 on Oricon's weekly singles chart.

Biography

Introduction Tackey & Tsubasa (the unit) is relatively new to the music industry, having just debuted in September of 2002. They're under the label Avex Trax, which also produces Do As Infinity, V6, Ayumi Hamasaki, dream and many other artists. However, before they officially debuted in 2002, both Tackey and Tsubasa were juniors in the company Johnny & Associates, which is famous for the male idols it produces. Johnny & Associates was created many years back by a man named Johnny Kitagawa. It's a management company that accepts young boys after an audition, and then trains them in singing, dancing, acting etc.; these boys are dubbed Johnny's Juniors. The juniors attend other Johnny's groups as backdancers, and eventually work their way up to the top of Johnny's, in the hopes of debuting into the music industry.

Johnny & Associates Before their debut, Tackey and Tsubasa were the top juniors in the company. In 1995 they started out as backdancers for KinKi Kids (who also had not yet debuted at the time) and then several years later, after becoming close friends in 1999, they became a popular duo among the Johnny's fans and everyone was waiting for them to officially debut. It was Johnny's plan to have them debut when they reached 20 years old, and so in summer of 2001, he announced they would debut in 2002 as solo singers -- meaning they would have to break up.

A Pre-Debut fight Everyone wanted the two to remain a duo, though probably no one wanted them to debut together more than Tackey and Tsubasa themselves. Tackey was constantly fighting and pleaing to the fans to help them to debut as a unit, and the fans created a whole campaign asking everyone who wanted them to debut together to send postcards and letters to Johnny & Associates, imploring Johhny K. to debut the two boys as a duo instead of as solo artits. It was a long fight, spanning a whole year, and got be quite a mess, and then on August 1 2002, Johnny announced that they would debut together. And so on September 11 2002, Tackey & Tsubasa released their debut album, Hatachi (meaning 20 years old).

Post-Debut To date, Tackey & Tsubasa have released 6 singles, 2 albums and 1 DVD. They've been quite successful, and their most recent CD releases have hit #1 on the Japanese music charts. The two also share a very close friendship, being best friends; this aspect of their relationship shows through very clearly through their interactions and interviews and is a very important part of the dynamic between them. Each has incredible strengths and skills, and as a result they complement each other very well. Because they are so new, they have many years as performers ahead of them, and I hope people will continue to support them all the way through.
