Takaboost

Encyclopedia : T : TA : TAK : Takaboost

Tak-a-Boost (Drink-A-Toast) was invented in Riverside, New Jersey. Pharmacist Benjamin R. Faunce first created the drink in 1913 for sale in his Bridgeboro Street store. He created the drink to make the tonics and certain medicines more palatable to his customers. The drink contained a caffeine lift inspiring the name "Boost". The product is shipped to a number of markets outside the County, but its core sales area remains Burlington County [link].

Boost is sold in syrup form, requiring the patron to mix it with water. The recommended mixture on the bottle is 4 parts water to 1 part syrup. The glass bottle in which Boost syrup is sold claims that the contents will make up to 80 drinks of Boost, but that is based upon their recommended mixture. The beauty of making your own Boost is that you can use any mixture that you please. Some prefer the "watered-down" version of Boost while others prefer the sweet, sweet taste of the concentrated blend of citrus fruit syrups. However, connoisseurs of this other-worldy drink are ardent in their belief that the mixture that provides maximum taste and enjoyment is 3.33/1.

Boost is also commonly sold in its ready-to-drink form by many shopkeepers in Riverside and in adjacent towns. The common cost of one large Boost is $1.00. However, in early 2006, citing inflation and fuel prices, the Riverside News Agency raised prices to $1.25 for a large Boost.

A third form of Boost that is commonly sold right beside the syrup/water mixture is a Boost Slushy. This can only be described as the pinnacle of Boost experimentation combining ready-to-drink Boost and crushed ice in a mixing machine that is rumored to include a dash of good times and a sprinkle of 'two thumbs up.' Boost Slushy's are sold at a premium (no doubt, due to ingredients), ranging from $1.25 to $1.50.

The Boost Company also provides both a no-caffeine Boost and a Diet Boost. These have often been described as "Boost without the Boost."

It is sold in syrup form at multiple locations throughout Southern New Jersey, but it is mainly consumed in Riverside and adjacent towns.

Rumors have been spread of high schoolers establishing "records" for the most Boosts consumed in one day, in one summer, in one year, etc. Through research, we have been able to determine the following unofficial records*:

One Day (24 hour period): 5 Boosts

One Summer (May 20 - August 20): 93 Boosts
