Encyclopedia : T : TA : TAK : Takahashi Shigetane
(1548-1586) was a retainer of the Japanese clan of Otomo during the Sengoku Period of the 16th century. Shigetane was adopted by Takahashi Nobutane and soon became known as one of the greatest retainers of the Otomo. Through the help of Tachibana Dosetsu, Shigetane was very instrumental in his holding of the Otomo clan's northern borders following the debacle at Mimigawa in 1578. Shigetane was active during the war between the Ryuzoji and Shimazu and ended up being later surrounded at the Iwaya Castle by a powerful army under the Shimazu. The defenders of the city defended it with all of their will, until they realized it was hopeless. Due to this fact Shigetane committed suicide. However, the Shimazu were deeply moved by the strong will of Shigetane. The Shimazu even prayed for Shigetane to honor him. Shigetane's younger sister, Otomo Yoshimune and his eldest son Muneshige had been adopted by Tachibana Dosetsu.
