Takanori Nishikawa

Encyclopedia : T : TA : TAK : Takanori Nishikawa

(born September 19, 1970 in Yasu, Shiga Prefecture, Japan), more well known as T.M.Revolution (Takanori Makes Revolution), is a Japanese pop singer. T.M.Revolution is a team that consists of composer and producer Daisuke Asakura, lyricist Akio Inoue, and vocalist Nishikawa himself.
In 1996, he released his debut single, "Dokusai -monopolize-" and immediately gained a large fan base. Later that year, he entered the J-pop scene; his song "Heart of Sword - Yoake Mae" ("Heart of Sword - Before Dawn") was used in the anime Rurouni Kenshin as the series's third closing theme. Nishikawa has since produced 20 singles and 9 albums. He has also contributed three songs to the anime series Gundam SEED: "Invoke", its first opening theme; "Meteor", an insert song (also used in SEED's later sequel); and "Zips", which was used in part 1 of . (The former two are from his 2003 album Coordinate, while the latter is from his 2004 album Seventh Heaven.) Following Gundam SEED, he produced two more songs for its sequel, Gundam SEED Destiny: "Ignited", as the first opening song; and "Vestige" as its theme song. ("Ignited" can also be found on his 2005 album Vertical Infinity, while "Vestige" is included in his 2006 album 10000000000.)

Nishikawa also became the seiyū for Miguel Aiman in Gundam SEED and for Heine Westenfluss in Gundam SEED Destiny. Both characters are based on his ideal appearance, blond hair with bangs (they also met the same gruesome fate; they were both sliced in half), and the mobile suit of Heine Westenfluss is orange, Nishikawa's favorite color. In fact, Westenfluss is a word play on his name Nishikawa: both mean "West River", and "Heine" was a play on his nickname "灰猫 (Haine)" while he was part of the band "Luis-Mary".

Takanori married Yumi Yoshimura of the Japanese duo Puffy in 1999. In 2003, when the Japanese media accused Yoshimura of an affair, Nishikawa filed for divorce. The divorce was finalized in that year.

His music has been recently distributed by Tofu Records, a company specializing in promoting Japanese artists in the North American market. CDs released so far with Tofu include his last three albums Coordinate, Seventh Heaven, and Vertical Infinity.

In 2003, Takanori Nishikawa made his live concert debut in the United States at the anime convention, Otakon. The popularity of the concert was evident as attendees filled the ballroom of the Baltimore Convention Center and an overflow room located in a exhibition hall of the Baltimore Convention Center to their entirety.

In 2004, Nishikawa attended PMX on his second U.S. Tour. Due to the huge success of this concert in America and because of his relations to Sony Music Japan, T.M.Revolution was asked to sing the ending song to Spiderman 2 in Japan, and produced the single "Web of Night" that included an English version of the song.

Nishikawa designs clothes for his clothing line called [Defrock]. The name comes from a play on words of the Japanese language. Cars use a device called a differential lock. The Japanese sound for "l" and "r" are almost interchangeable, so he changed it to his favorite type of music, rock.

He was also a radio DJ host on his show called "All Night Nippon" () from January 1997 to September 26, 2005, where listeners who could not meet him at his concerts had a chance to talk to him.

Nishikawa appeared on the 49th and 56th editions of Kōhaku Uta Gassen. Since April 2005, he is the cohost of Pop Jam, a music variety show on NHK.

Several of his songs are named with the same initials as his abbreviated stage name TMR. Examples of these are "Timeless Mobius Rover", "Tide Moon River", "Trace Millennium Road", "True Merry Rings", "Tomorrow Meets Resistance", "Tears Macerate Reason," and "Twinkle Million Rendezvous". Most of his albums (except for his first album, Makes Revolution) include one such song.

Between 1999 and 2000, Nishikawa temporarily changed his stage name from T.M.Revolution to the end of genesis T.M.R.evolution turbo type D, or TMR-e for short. The singles "Setsugen -Winter Dust-", "Kagerou -KAGEROH-", and "Gekkou -GEKKOH-" were released under this name. Asakura took a step forward from the shadow of producer, appearing more frequently in music videos and performing live alongside Nishikawa.
