Tannu Uriankhai (Traditional Chinese: 唐努烏梁海; Simplified Chinese: 唐努乌梁海; Hanyu Pinyin: Tángnǔ Wūliáng Hǎi) was originally a part of Outer Mongolia (Mongolia Region of the Republic of China since 1912). But at the time when Outer Mongolia seceded from the Republic of China under the Chinese Nationalist Party (Kuomintang) and established the communist People's Republic of Mongolia, the region of Tannu Uriankhai became an independent communist state, the Tuvinian People's Republic, which was eventually annexed by the Soviet Union in 1944.

Nowadays, the realms of Tuva largely corresponds to the Tuva Republic of the Russian Federation, with the remaining spreading in the modern state of Mongolia and the rest of Russia. Sovereignty over the area has not been officially renounced by the Republic of China, based on the island of Taiwan since 1949.
