The Tara River emerges from the confluence of the Ospanica and VeruĊĦa Rivers in the Dinaric Alps of Montenegro, flows 144 kilometers northward and converges with the Piva River near the Bosnian border to form the Drina River.
The Tara River cuts the Tara River Gorge, the deepest canyon in Montenegro and Europe, at 78 kilometers in length and 1,300 meters at its deepest. The canyon is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Bosnian and the Montenegran government had plans to flood the Tara Gorge, with the contruction of a hydroelectric dam in the Drina River. However, it [abandoned this plan (PDF)] in April, 2005 after several successful protests of advocates for the preservation of the canyon.
In the area of Serbia to the north there is Tara Mountain and Tara National Park. The Tara River is situated in the Durmitor national park.
