Tarrafal is a municipality located in the northern part of the island of Santiago in Sotavento in southcentral Cape Verde. The municipal and the parish population is around 18,000, the area is 112.4 km² and the density is about 160/km². Tarrafal is located 75 km NNW of Cape Verde's capital Praia.
Tarrafal are linked with a road linking to Assomada and to Praia and a small road to the northern point of the island of Santiago. Farmlands are situated in the northern and the valley areas, the mountains including the Serra da Malagueta ranges covers the southern part. Grasslands and bushes covers the rest of the area with a couple of forests.
Its main economy are businesses in Tarrafal are agriculture, fishing and tourism, it is followed by businesses. Most of the population are rural, the majority of the urban population lies in Tarrafal.
