Tarrytown is a village in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 11,090 at the 2000 census.
The Village of Tarrytown is located in the northwest part of the Town of Greenburgh, New York.
Most of the village's population is white. About one-fifth of Tarrytown's population consists of Hispanics, with an equal mix of Puerto Ricans, Ecuadorans, Dominicans, and Cubans.
Geography
Tarrytown is adjacent to the Hudson River and the Tappan Zee Bridge.Tarrytown is located at (41.069108, -73.859773)[Geographic references#1GR1].
According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 14.7 km² (5.7 mi²). 7.7 km² (3.0 mi²) of it is land and 7.0 km² (2.7 mi²) of it (47.54%) is water.
Commuter service to New York City is available via the Tarrytown train station, served by Metro-North Railroad.
Demographics
As of the census[Geographic references#2GR2] of 2000, there were 11,090 people, 4,533 households, and 2,765 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,436.9/km² (3,724.7/mi²). There were 4,688 housing units at an average density of 607.4/km² (1,574.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the village was 77.44% White, 7.04% African American, 0.22% Native American, 6.49% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 5.29% from other races, and 3.47% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 16.17% of the population.There were 4,533 households out of which 26.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.5% were married couples living together, 9.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.0% were non-families. 31.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.95.
In the village the population was spread out with 19.7% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 34.8% from 25 to 44, 22.5% from 45 to 64, and 14.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 82.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 77.8 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $68,762, and the median income for a family was $82,445. Males had a median income of $61,699 versus $41,054 for females. The per capita income for the village was $39,472. About 1.8% of families and 4.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.4% of those under age 18 and 4.6% of those age 65 or over.
