The Tees Valley is a distinct economic and increasing culture/social area in North East England. It can be described as "greater Teesside" and consists of the four Unitary Authorities created by the breakup of the County of Cleveland in 1996: Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Redcar & Cleveland, and Stockton-On-Tees along with the borough of Darlington which became a unitary authority in 1997.

For ceremonial and historical purposes, the areas north and south of the River Tees belong to the counties of County Durham and Yorkshire respectively. This is reinforced by the appropriate office of the Lord Lieutenancy, representing HM The Queen in these established geographical areas.

Tees Valley is one of four sub-regions in the North East, the others being County Durham, Northumberland and Tyne and Wear.

Here are some figures for the land area and population of the 5 main towns and boroughs within the Tees Valley (the population figures are rounded to the nearest 100):

Darlington UA 73 sq miles, 101,000 (Borough), 86,100 (Town)

Hartlepool UA 33 sq miles, 91,000 (Borough), 86,000 (Town)

Middlesbrough UA 22 sq miles, 145,000 (Borough), 190,000 (Town)

Redcar and Cleveland UA 93 sq miles, 139,000 (Borough), 36,000 (Town)

Stockton-on-Tees UA 79 sq miles, 181,000 (Borough), 79,000 (Town)

In total the Tees Valley serves around 657,000 people within the 5 boroughs over 300 sq miles (approximately the size of New York City) and a further 100,000 on the outskirts in smaller towns and villages. Tees Valley is known as a City region as it offers everything a major city can offer. The whole area is sometimes regarded as a city in every way but without the official title.
