Tekken 5

Encyclopedia : T : TE : TEK : Tekken 5

Tekken 5 is the sixth installment in the popular Tekken video game franchise. It is the last in the series for the PlayStation 2 so far, and decidedly the best, fully-featured Tekken game to date.

Gameplay

Tekken 5 is credited for taking the series back to its roots. It incorporates a faster, more fluid fighting system, improved graphics, returning characters, and some of the Tekken series' trademark infinite stages. It also retains its wall juggling concept from Tekken 4, but the element is effectively less easy to abuse and easier to defend against. The home version is a collector's edition of sorts, as it includes full arcade emulations of Tekken, Tekken 2, Tekken 3, and Star Blade.

Tekken 5 includes a beat up mini-game in direct lineage to the Tekken Force modes in Tekken 3 and Tekken 4 called "Devil Within". This mini-game follows the adventures of Jin Kazama as he searches the G corporation in search for information on his mising mother and other answers. Being somewhat story oriented, the player is not permitted to use their own choice of characters like previous iterations. Along with fighting various Jack models in the mini-game, the player must pursue minor key quests to proceed. This mode is one of the two ways to unlock the playable version of Jin's Devil incarnation.

Story

Following the conclusion of the Tekken 4 tournament, Heihachi Mishima defeated Kazuya Mishima and led him to Hon Maru, planning to let both Kazuya and Jin Kazama battle, and steal their respective devil genes. However, Jin defeats both of his predescesors and flies away, leaving the latter two unconsious. Shortly after, Jack-4's invade the compound, programmed to take Heihachi's life. For a short moment of time, father and son fight off the horde of Jacks, until Kazuya gets a better idea and escapes, leaving Heihachi to deal with the Jack-4's by himself. They quickly overwhelm him and self-destruct, leaving him for dead and also reviving Jinpachi Mishima from his 50 year slumber. Jinpachi then proceeds to take back the Mishima Zaibatsu for himself. A few days later, the fifth King of Iron Fist Tournament is announced.

Character Roster

Changes/Improvements

Character Voices

In Tekken 5 the developers had some of the characters speak in their native languages; Korean and Mandarin were added to Japanese and English). Steve Fox, however, is the only English speaking character who doesn't speak with an American accent; Craig Marduk doesn't speak with an Australian accent and Nina and Anna Williams don't have any Irish inflection in their voices.

Flat Floored Backgrounds

The backgrounds' raised and lowered areas from Tekken 4 were removed at the fans' request. This change made every stage play similarly aside from the wall placements.

Currently available in arcades throughout the world, soon to be released for the PSP: Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, once known as Tekken 5.2, is an upgrade of Tekken 5. It was officially announced at the 2005 JAMMA AM Show but news of it leaked slightly beforehand. Unlike Tekken 5.1 which merely tried to balance Tekken 5, Dark Resurrection adds a host of new content.

Information

Over 35 stages are available, including all-new stages and a remade forest stage from Tekken 3. All of the existing stages from Tekken 5 have been set in different times of day, with differing setpieces (Heihachi's Honmaru compound, for instance, is no-longer burning, and the secret garden is now strewn with jack-o-lanterns). The prior versions of these stages are still available, but must be unlocked. There are many more customization items for the characters, and for the first time, Mokujin and Eddy can be customized as well. All extra costumes from the PS2 edition of the game are present, and some have been made customizable (Xiaoyu and Asuka's school uniforms). The three animal characters have had their custom color regions expanded/reworked, including color options for Roger's and Panda's fur. The bear characters have more expressive facial animation (mouth movement). Eddy Gordo is a standard character, separate from Christie, with his own character select space and items. Armor King is a standard character with moves of his own. All characters have new moves. Jinpachi Mishima has an altered appearance, with a skin texture like veins of fire or flowing magma, and a glowing white horn protrudes from his forehead. The selection screen and VS loading screen sport new CG renders of all the characters, most featuring new default color schemes.

There are two brand new characters in T5: DR, Sergei Dragunov and Lili [link], as well as the returning character Armor King. According to Tekken Zaibatsu [link], "Dragunov is described as a human weapon... with origins tracing back to the frozen tundra" and "Lili is a rich girl from Monaco." Dragunov fights with Sambo and Lili uses her skills in dance to fight in her own "tricky" style.

PSP Version

Tekken: Dark Resurrection for the PSP has been released in Japan and with a US release to follow on July 25, 2006. Initial reports are very positive. The game is one of the best looking games for the PSP to date, running at full 60 fps during matches (although it reverts to around 30fps for the pre-fight and post-fight cinematics). The game also features game-sharing, which means that only one copy of the game is needed to play over ad-hoc. Other modes include Tekken Dojo, where the players fights ghost of other players (the player himself can record and post his or her own ghost data online); Gold Battle, where the player fights for in-game cash and a new version of Tekken Bowl. The games controls work well despite the nature of the PSPs d-pad, although Namco has made a special d-pad attachment (similar to the one released by Capcom for Street Fighter Alpha 3 MAX) that comes with the Japanese and Asian versions of the game. It is not known if this attachment will be available with the US release as well. On July 13, 2006 it was announced that the game had gone gold - meaning the development process has been completed and is ready to be published. [link]
