Hiking Tenaya Canyon
Disclaimer The official map provided by the Park Rangers at Yosemite contains the warning: "Hiking in Tenaya Canyon is dangerous and strongly discouraged".Surprisingly, Tenaya Canyon is not among the many crowded hikes in Yosemite. A practical trailhead would be from the Yosemite valley floor, but few hikers ascend the canyon from below. The little-used trails are prone to coverage by scree; the random rock cover that makes walking unpleasant at best, and dangerous at worst.
From the top of the canyon, which may be glimpsed from the Tioga road to Tuolumne Meadows, the signature Half Dome of Yosemite dominates the canyon. Clouds Rest towers over the central canyon.
From the bottom of the canyon, which leads into Yosemite Valley, Mirror Lake and a short trail around it are quite well used even by day hikers.
Canyoneering
Starting from Tenaya Lake, there are three mandatory rappels, newly bolted by the ASCA in 2003, along with one pack swim. DO NOT ATTEMPT this canyoneering adventure without previous experience and competence with rapelling and canyon navigation.
