Tenten (romanized as Ten Ten in the English anime) is a fictional character in the anime and manga series Naruto.
Background
Originally a Genin level ninja who graduated the academy a year before Naruto did and now a Chūnin, Tenten is a student of Might Guy together with Rock Lee and Hyūga Neji. Not much is known about her techniques, other than that they involve the mastery of weaponry--Tenten is an expert in the use of melee armaments (such as the three sectional staff in the anime) and summons these special melee weapons from scrolls when needed. She also uses what may be chakra strings to control and guide the direction of her weapons. However, this technique is useless against opponents who use wind and sound attacks, as seen in her swift defeat by Temari, one such person.
Tenten feels very strongly about both her teammates, especially idolizing Neji, and could be seen staring with pride at Lee during his training with Guy at one occasion. She is often seen sparring with Neji, often to help him train his Hakkeshō Kaiten (Eight Trigram Palms Heavenly Spin).
Her goal as a kunoichi is to be as great as Tsunade, one of the legendary Sannin, and she trains hard to achieve her dream. She is considered one of the best female ninja in the village. Tenten also strongly believes that female ninjas are just as good as male ninjas.
Filler Arcs
Tenten is seen in the following filler arcs: Raiga Story Arc, Bird Country Story Arc, and the Bear Country Story Arc. In the Raiga Story Arc, we see a more detailed viewing of her weapons mastery, as well as some more sisterly aspects of her personality. Then, in the Bird Country Arc, we see her temporarily crush on the supposed "Sagi-sama", who is actually Sagi's twin sister, Toki, in disguise. She also showed her concern for Naruto after he was arrested. In the end, she shows much admiration for Toki's determination and is proud to see her become daimyo. In the Bear Country Arc, we see her more "ditzy" and silly sides when she performs her creative shadowing technique.Naruto II Arc
Two and a half years later, Team Guy makes their debut in Chapter 253. Tenten and her teammates are sent as backup as Naruto, Sakura, and Kakashi go on a mission to rescue Gaara from the criminal organization Akatsuki. Tenten is now a Chūnin, has changed her outfit and now carries one large scroll. Her skills in weapons have also improved, seen when she uses a bomb against Kisame during Team Guy's mission to provide back-up to Team Kakashi.
Trivia
- According to the official databook Tenten's hobby is astrology (fortune-telling and horoscopes). This may mean that she uses one of the many forms of divination used in Japan that have origins in China.
- Her favorite food is Chinese food and sesame dumplings (Sesame Dango). She dislikes eating umeboshi.
- The name "Tenten" has no particular meaning, but repeating the same syllable twice is a popular naming scheme for pandas; she does, after all, sport buns on her head, like panda ears. Repeated names are also used affectionately in China.
- The official Chinese dub dubbed Tenten's name as "Tian-Tian" (天天). "Tian" in Chinese means heaven, day or sky, just as "Ten" means "heaven" or "sky" in Japanese.
- "Tenten" can also mean "sporadically" or "here or there" in Japanese--an amusing coincidence, considering her infrequent and insubstantial appearances in both the manga and anime.
- "Tenten" could refer to her ability to hit "Ten targets out of ten," as Might Guy said that she never misses with her weapons.
- In some foreign subtitles Tenten has been referred to as Ama, from the term "Ama kudari", which means "descending from heaven". This has caused some fans to mistakenly conclude that "Ama" is her last name.
- Very little is known about her past. In fact, she is the only genin in Naruto whose past has never been mentioned. In addition, in the manga, none of her fights have ever been drawn out in full.
- Tenten's name is often misspelled as "TenTen", "Ten Ten", "Ten ten", "Ten-ten" or "Ten-Ten". Even the Viz dub spelled it as Ten Ten on the match-up board in episode 42, but her official romanized name has always been "Tenten".
- In an interview in the Second Official Databook, Kishimoto stated that, out of the four central Konoha kunoichi, Tenten would be his type "because I like her design."
- Out of all her teammates, Tenten uses ninjutsu the most, though it is only to summon her weapons.
- Tenten bears a strong resemblance to Chun-Li of Street Fighter fame.
