Tetsuzan Nagata (永田 鉄山 Nagata Tetsuzan; January 14, 1884 - August 12, 1935) was a Japanese soldier and politician.
Military career
Nagata was born in Nagano and graduated from Military Academy in October 1904, and from War College, November 1911; Company Commander, 58th Infantry Regiment, August 1913; Language Officer, Germany, October 1913; Office of Military Training, August 1914; Language Officer, Denmark, June 1915; Military Attache, Sweden, June 1921; Army General Staff, February 1923; Office of Military Training, March 1923; Military Affairs Bureau, December 1924; Section Chief, Economic Mobilization Bureau, October 1926; Colonel, March 1927; Regimental Commander, 3d Infantry, March 1928; Section Chief, Military Affairs Bureau, August 1930.Political career
He was a member of the moderate Toseiha military faction, led by Kazushige Ugaki, with Gen Sugiyama Kuniaki Koiso, Yoshijiro Umezu, and Hideki Tojo. They clashed with the radical Kodoha faction, under Sadao Araki. Later both groups joined as the Imperial Way Faction, the nationalist party active in the 1930s to the Pacific War. He was a member of the leading group, and adviser on Germany. He served as Chief, Second Bureau, Army General Staff (MajGen), April 1932; Brigade Commander, 1st Infantry Brigade, August 1932; Chief, Military Affairs Bureau, March 1934.Nagata died in August 1935, assassinated by Lt. Col. Saburo Aizawa with a sword, for supposedly putting the Army "in the paws of high finance;". Nagata was posthumously promoted to Lt. General, and his assassin was shot by firing squad.
