Teuvo Kohonen, Dr. Ing (born July 11, 1934), is a Finnish academican and prominent researcher. He is currently professor emeritus of the Academy of Finland.
Prof. Kohonen has made many contributions to the field of neural networks, including the Learning Vector Quantization algorithm, fundamental theories of distributed associative memory and optimal associative mappings, the learning subspace method and novel algorithms for symbol processing like redundant hash addressing. He has published several books and over 200 peer-reviewed papers. His most famous contribution is perhaps the self-organizing map (SOM) (also known as the Kohonen map, although Kohonen himself prefers SOM).
Teuvo Kohonen's self-organizing map with Bayesian inference, and John F. Sowa's conceptual graphs may eventually make it possible to implement intelligent agents for unsupervised learning.
An application of the Learning Vector Quantization is the gnod-database.
