Texarkana and Fort Smith Railway

Encyclopedia : T : TE : TEX : Texarkana and Fort Smith Railway

The Texarkana and Fort Smith Railway was a railway that ran from Kansas City to Port Arthur, Texas and eventually became part of the Kansas City Southern system. The railway was chartered on June 18 1885 and was initially used for logging in the area around Texarkana. The Kansas City, Pittsburgh and Gulf Railroad Company gained control of the railway and set about completing a link between Kansas City and the Gulf of Mexico. Land was acquired on the banks of Sabine Lake and the city of Port Arthur was laid out. The Kansas City Southern Railway Company acquired the assets of the KCP&G under foreclosure. On December 31 1943 after changes had been made in the laws governing railways in Texas the Texarkana and Fort Smith Railway was merged into Kansas City Southern and was dissolved.
