Théophile de Donder

Théophile de Donder (1873-1957) was a Belgian mathematician and physicist. He was born and died in Brussels. He received his doctorate in physics and mathematics from the University of Brussels in 1899 and became professor of mathematical physics at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (1911-1942). He was made a member of Académie royale de Belgique in 1929.

In the 1920s, de Donder supported the relativistic ideas of Einstein and became his friend. His research included calculus of variations, relativity, electromagnetism, wave mechanics, thermodynamics, and chemical affinity. He published about 100 papers in his lifetime.
