The Ambushers

Encyclopedia : T : TH : THE : The Ambushers

The Ambushers is the title of a novel by Donald Hamilton first published in 1963, continuing the exploits of assassin Matt Helm. In 1967, it was very loosely adapted as an American comedy-spy-fi motion picture starring Dean Martin.

The film was the third of four produced in the late 1960s starring Martin as secret agent Matt Helm. It followed The Silencers and Murderers' Row and like those earlier films followed the approach of being a spoof of the James Bond film series rather than a straight adaptation of Hamilton's novel, although The Ambushers does, at least, use some of the same character names from the original book.

The basic plot of The Ambushers sees Helm heading to Europe in order to track down a US Government-built "flying saucer". Co-starring in the film are Senta Berger, Albert Salmi and Kurt Kasznar.

This film is generally considered the weakest of the four Matt Helm films, and is cited in the book The Fifty Worst Films of All Time by Harry and Michael Medved.

The Ambushers was followed by one final film, The Wrecking Crew in 1969.
