The Edge is a 1997 survival and relationship drama film directed by Lee Tamahori starring Anthony Hopkins as a billionaire magazine publicist and Alec Baldwin as one of his ambitious employees. Elle Macpherson has a supporting role as Hopkins' trophy wife and model for his magazine. Her presence in the beginning of the movie acts as a catalyst for the film's bold male rivalry between Baldwin and Hopkins.
On a trip for a photo shoot, Hopkins and Baldwin crash their plane in a mountainous region of rural Alaska. The rest of the story explores, through action and intricate dialog, the strong male survival instincts of these characters in terms of their competition with each other and with their environment, including a huge bear (played by Bart the Bear).
The movie was written by David Mamet and, despite the unusual setting, it touches upon many themes common to Mamet's other works, including the use of strong male characters, tough posturings and playful surprises.
The film can be summed up as: two competing males journey into the wilderness to fight for survival. One returns as the victor, having used all of his resources, including those of diplomacy and reason, to conquer the elements and his competition. The victor is portrayed as the protagonist with superior cunning, a moral high ground, and the utmost of integrity. The ending hints that had Baldwin's character survived, the official portrayal of events might have been different.
