The Fairly Oddparents
Encyclopedia : T : TH : THE : The Fairly Oddparents
The Fairly OddParents is a popular American animated television series created by Butch Hartman, first airing on March 30, 2001. It has only one more episode left: Its series finale . It was produced by Frederator Studios, whose show Oh Yeah! Cartoons, showed the pilot episodes alongside many other first-run and one-time cartoons. It is shown in the United States on the children's television station Nickelodeon, and is also shown internationally. It is currently one of the most popular shows on Nickelodeon, second only to SpongeBob SquarePants, with a TV-Y rating. The television series is distributed in Africa and the Middle East by the Canadian animation company Nelvana.
Overview
General overview
The show is set in the fictional town of Dimmsdale, which is generally shown to be in northern California (although in "Fairy Idol", it was shown that Dimmsdale was located in Southern California) but also reflects the creator's hometown in Michigan. It should also be noted that episodes have had time travel to both Wild West and Colonial (East Coast) Dimmsdale. It follows the day-to-day life of 10-year-old Timmy Turner. An only child, Timmy is often preyed upon by such adversaries as his evil babysitter, Vicky, his maniacal fairy-obsessed teacher, Mr. Crocker, the school bully Francis, and various magical creatures: Mama Cosma, Jorgen Von Strangle, Norm the Genie, and The Pixies.Just as his situation was particularly grim, he was granted a pair of fairy godparents, named Cosmo and Wanda, who had the power to grant his wishes and were charged with making Timmy happy. Unfortunately, Cosmo is somewhat slow and dumb, and the two often come up with strange dangerous ideas; although well meaning, their wishes often go awry. Wanda, Cosmo's more sensible (and somewhat sarcastic) wife, must devote her time to ensuring both Timmy's and Cosmo's safety. These Fairly OddParents (a pun on "fairy godparents"), mindful of their secretive existence, disguise themselves as various animals and objects in public, always with the same peculiar colors to identify the two: Cosmo is always a light green, and Wanda is always a light pink. The only exception is when they become goldfish; only their eyes stay the same. Other than Timmy, no-one seems to notice green and pink talking birds, or pillows with faces and gold crowns.
Most episodes end with a deus ex machina, because Timmy has fairy godparents that grant wishes for him. Many episode plots are resolved by Timmy yelling, "I wish everything was back to normal!" or something very similar. While never directly stated, the moral of the story is often that you can't solve all your problems with quick fixes or easy answers, and that doing the job right the first time is best, even if it sometimes means hard work, or it involves accepting the responsibility of your actions.
Most episodes of the show consists of two cartoons (each approximately 11 minutes long). Some of them have one cartoon (22 minutes long). A few episodes that contained a collection of the Oh Yeah! shorts were also aired, containing 3 cartoons.
The show's humor features run-on and kiddy jokes to appeal to the younger audience, but also has sarcastic and crude jokes as well as non-explicit sex references or innuendo ("Now it's time to copy Dad's magazines!") to appeal to teens and adults as well.
The Fairly OddParents first aired as a short film on Oh Yeah! Cartoons in 1998, which aired some ten episodes of the original show. Oh Yeah! Cartoons was cancelled in 2001, but Nickelodeon offered to pick up the franchise. This offer was accepted by creator Butch Hartman. The show began airing its own full-length episodes as its own series in 2001, alongside "Invader ZIM". After a dismal run of sub-par new episodes aired in 2004-2005, and after it failed to generate any merchandising profits, Nickelodeon finally decided to pull the plug on "The Fairly Oddparents", and the show is currently ending at episode 83.
Characters
Timmy is a kid who seems to have the worst life anyone could ever have (except for Chester McBadBat, as stated in Fairy Idol), which is why he has Fairy God Parents. Timmy often takes his wishes for granted though. Cosmo often suggests stupid wishes, and Wanda advises against it, but Timmy wishes for it anyways. Timmy is haunted by Vicky, Crocker, and Francis.
Cosmo and Wanda are a pair of fairies in the TV series.
In the first episodes Cosmo and Wanda used to be more of a team, with both acting playfully daffy. But now Cosmo is the stupid one and Wanda the smart one, a hackneyed, well-worn formula used since the days of Laurel and Hardy (circa 1920). Cosmo is quite the "mama's boy". He loves Wanda deeply, even though they quarrel from episode to episode. He often undermines Wanda's attempts to protect their godson from his naive and sometimes potentially dangerous wishes, and encourages Timmy to disrespect her and ignore her wise advice. Cosmo often comes off as oblivious to other people's feelings and safety, the results of which often makes him unlikeable and annoying.
Wanda is the wiser fairy, yet she goes along (reluctantly) with Timmy's stupid wishes. She loves Cosmo, even though he is an airhead. She dislikes Mama Cosma, although Wanda's compassion and integrity once led her to help Cosmo care for his mother when she was sick, and her father Big Daddy (an obvious play on the italian mafia) owns the fairyworld trash company.
AJ is Timmy's second best friend. He is a genius to whom college would only take two weeks. He scraped some of his own brain cells to clone himself, and he has a secret lab hidden inside his room.
Timmy's best friend. His father, Bucky McBadbat, is the worst baseball player ever. He is filthy and enjoys the simpler pleasures in life. He also deeply hates the... gulp ... BANJO! Chester is a decent sort who, despite living in poverty and suffering public scorn thanks to the failures of his father, possesses higher ideals and more compassion than his friend Timmy - yet for some reason he has never permanently been given fairy godparents of his own.Mama Cosma
Mama Cosma despises Wanda for stealing Cosmo from her, she often tries to get Cosmo to dump Wanda for a more feminine wife, but they are inseperable. Mama Cosma has even tried getting Cosmo taken away from Timmy so he would return back to Fairy World (first appearance: Appartnership).
He used to be a Fairy Scout instructer, until Cosmo came along. Now he is the guardian of Fairy Heck. He often gets mad at Cosmo and Wanda. He has nearly taken them away from Timmy several times. He plays the role of the fairy version of Arnold Schwarzenegger.
The Tooth Fairy
A Fairy that has to take children's baby teeth and exchange them with quarters. Nobody knows why she buys so many teeth or where she gets so many quarters. She was one of the contestants for Fairy Idol.
The horribly evil babysitter that appeared in the first episode. To date she wrapped Timmy in toilet paper for haloween, made him rewire a house, and stayed with him day after day after day. She scares her parents and sister and Chip Skylark. The only intelligent life that likes her is Mark, the alien from Ukopatamia.
His first name is Denzel. He used to have Cosmo and Wanda for fairies, but Timmy accidentaly took them away. He left himself a note saying that fairies exist. Since then he has proved to everyone that he is crazy. He hates children and Mr. BurkandBake. It has been suggested that his mothers first name may be "Betty" making her: Betty Crocker
Gary was once 5 year old Timmy's imaginary best friend, but he was forgetten and trapped in Timmy's imagination for 5 years until he was wished out again. He hates timmy for forgetting him for so long. He once joined forces with other un-wished characters who despised Timmy on "Un-wish island" to plot his downfall.
Ugopatamian Prince. His people, the Ugopatamians, hate anything that we would consider good. Some examples are candy is able to kill, vegetables rot their insides and teeth, and Fluffy and colorful stuffed animals are able to burn their skin. He is in love with Vicky, the only person that would be considered good on their planet (in this cartoon).
He is the bully at Timmy's school. He is referred to as the terrifying gray child. But to the police, he used to be "Such a good boy". He is the only bully at school who except Mr. Crocker.
A Comic book superhero who was bitten by a radioactive actor. His coverjob is a reporter for the daily blabbity. His sidekick is Cleft, the boy chin wonder (Timmy Turner). His arch nemisis is the bronze kneecap. The Bronze Kneecap
The Crimson Chin's arch nemesis. He made his bronze suit out of all of his bronze trophies.
The genie bent on getting the freedom of a fairy. He had a scheme to get Wanda and Cosmo to quit. He also wants to destroy Canada. "They've had it too good for too long".Minor Characters
Dale Dimm
Dimsdale was founded by his name because Timmy exposed Alvin Bitteroot (a relative of Mr.Crocker) as a witch (or wizard). Dale squashed him with his own foot and put him in a well. Later Timmy took a photo of the residents of Dimmsdale and proved to AJ that Dale Dimm existed.
A Fairy that has to do Jorgan's bidding. Is one of the wimpy fairies that only support the other characters, normaly by doing one small thing or saying one small line. He was one of the Judges at the Fairy Idol.
Wanda's father. He is the leader of the fairy world Mob. He also own Big Daddy's Trash disposal.Mr. Bickles
Mr Bickles is a teacher who is never stuck to one dream for long. In every episode he is in his dream gets ruined. One of his more memorable dream was to be a magician. When Timmy replaced him he became a vilian (The Great Bicklini).Mr. Burkandbake
The head of the school newspaper. He is a hipee bent on destroying "the man". He reveals that Smoof is a naturally occuring substance. He sold Timmy and Mr. Crocker a lamp with the genie Norm inside. He also has horrible back hair.
A super hero from a TV show. He has had his own special and Crash Nebula on ice. If you look at what video game that Tucker and Danny are playing, it is Crash Nebula (at the movie theatre).
Simon is a tv producer that made a show called "leave it to Binky" and "Timmy TV". He was one of the judges on Fairy Idol.Episodes

Popularity
Although The Fairly OddParents was not very popular in its first year, it began to catch on later, attracting both a child and adult fan base. SpongeBob SquarePants was the only thing keeping The Fairly OddParents from becoming Nickelodeon's most highly rated show at this point.
Early 2003 was the peak of popularity for Fairly OddParents. Its ratings were extremely high, and it very briefly passed SpongeBob SquarePants. The show saw its very quick rise to the top and fall in summer of 2003 when the show's first TV movie, Abra-Catastrophe! was aired. The film was a success and many products were merchandised.
After Abra-Catastrophe, creator Butch Hartman created a new project for Nickelodeon called Danny Phantom.
However, when the show aired its new third season later that year, it was met with a wave of criticism. With new voices for principal characters such as Chester and A.J., many felt that the show had been dumbed-down from its original double entendre style of comedy. Jokes became more "over the top" and repetitive (such as when Timmy was watching a television show with commentary similar to Girls Gone Wild) as well as featuring much more immature potty humor, (which the show previously used on minimum levels). It began to take an exaggerated bout on derogatory views against women (mainly displayed by Cosmo against Wanda) and more "gross-out" scenes. Allegedly many older viewers tuned out, and slowly the show's ratings plummeted for a while. Then SpongeBob SquarePants bounced back in as Nick's highest rated show, although it is assumed that it has been in a ratings slump during the past few years. By 2005, though, The Fairly OddParents remained at its seemingly permanent position as Nickelodeon's second most highly rated show, despite a slight decline in popularity. Some fans blame Danny Phantom for its decline due to Hartman's shift in concentration to that show.
A second Fairly OddParents TV movie was made, titled Channel Chasers. Since then, there have been other specials, like The Secret Origin of Denzel Crocker, The Jimmy Timmy Power Hour (with sequels), Crash Nebula, and Fairy Idol. These movies did spark a short resurgance in FOP's popularity, but its ratings soon began to gradually fall again.
After a dismal 2004-05 and 2005-06 season, Nickelodeon ceased the production of the show late in 2005, with the final episode scheduled to be . Butch Hartman made the [official announcement] on his forum on January 24, 2006.

Trivia
- In One Episode, Timmy is visited by himself in a futuristic outfit with Cosmo and Wanda. However, in "Channel Chasers" he ages himself until he can't reconize Cosmo and Wanda. This is obviously a goof up because in the future, Timmy was with Cosmo and Wanda and was still young. (It's possible it was a future descendant of Timmy.)
- In "Presto Chang-O" when Timmy(Mr. Crocker in disguise) gets home from school, his mother toss a load of laundry at him. In the background, you can see a small shirt that is the exact shirt worn by Danny Fenton in "Danny Phantom", also created by Butch Hartman
- Mr. Crocker bears a strong resemblance to Mr. Craft from Sabrina, the Teenage Witch. They are both obsessed with finding out their student’s secret.
- In "Emotion Commotion", it is (indirectly) revealed that Dimmsdale is located somewhere in south-central California. Although, that would mean Dimmsdale would be in the middle of the Mojave Desert In Some Episodes, it is shown that Downtown Dimmsdale is located right next to the ocean, which would support the scene of a beach in some episodes.
- If one looks closely Timmy's eyebrowns were matching the color of his hair in earlier seasons but then his eyebrow color is now darker than his hair color
- In the intro, after saying "Yeah right," Vicky's head is always changed into something that will later relate to the second episode (e.g a toilet) This intro is at the very beginning of every episode except the films which normally feature a 3D intro and different ending credits.
- Timmy wished for heat vision in the episode Father Time, and never un-wished it. Ever since then, he has used his heat vision in several other episodes.
- In Father Time, it is revealed that Cosmo and Wanda were once Bill Gates's fairies
- Wanda's name could be a play on the movie "A Fish Called Wanda", as the Godparents most often pose as Timmy's pet goldfish. Cosmo's name is obviously from the world cosmos, meaning universe.
- In the episode Most Wanted Wish, Timmy used an "emergency pneumatic escape pod to Texas" to get to the "Fairy Rage in the Cage" in Texas. Cosmo then said to Wanda "And you thought that it was a dumb wish!". In other episodes with emergency pneumatic escape pods, Cosmo would repeat that comment every time they used it. It is odd that the fairies would need the escape pods, as Cosmo and Wanda can "poof" (magically teleport) anywhere.
- In the episode Power Mad, when Cosmo & Wanda act out T.V. programs, there were many references, such as in the scene where there is a man on stage who married his car, an obvious reference to the Jerry Springer Show, or Maury. Also, when there is a logo on the bottom left corner of the screen with techno music, and Cosmo is on stage, and says "It's a show about nothing... how will we know when it's over?", as a direct reference to Seinfeld. Also Cosmo and Wanda star in a fictional series called "I Love Wanda." and he quotes Ricky Ricardo yelling "Wanda! You got some splainin' to do!" (a spoof of I Love Lucy.)
- In the final part of Channel Chasers, a grown up Timmy is shown to have two kids of his own: Tommy and Tammy. (from their appearances, Butch leaves it to the viewer to decide whom Timmy married- Tootie or Trixie.) We then see Cosmo and Wanda, showing that they will be his children's godparents.
- In the episode "Escape to Unwish Island", the names of various stars and celebrities (including Carrot Top, Vanilla Ice, the members of Milli Vanilli, Walt Disney, Duran Duran, among others- including Denzel Crocker) can be seen on their "unwish cabinets". It can be assumed that they once had godparents as well.
- Jorgen Von Strangle, a fairy resembling Jean-Claude Van Damme with an Austrian accent, is called Jean-Claude van Ramme (spoof of Jean Claude Van Damme) in the German dub version.
- Wanda often has premonitions that alert her that Timmy and/or Cosmo are in danger, or that Timmy is about to make a wish that will go bad. She refers to it as her "Cosmo is about to make Timmy dead" sense or other similar name. Similar to Spider-Man's "Spider Sense".
- All of Cosmo's unfortunate pets in the episode "Sleep Over and Over" seem to be named after characters.
- Cat-Man is an old villain in the old Batman comic series, who used cat themed objects to defy both Batman and Catwoman. In the series, he is voiced by Adam West.
- Cat-Man always wears a utility belt stocked with different cat themed items. His real name is Adam West, clearly a tribute to his VA.
- In Vicky Loses Her Icky, the President of the United States has a button he can press to destroy Pluto in case he turns evil. This is a parody of the suitcase from the The Kid Who Ran for President series, which can launch a nuclear bomb in the wrong hands.
- If every fairy in the universe wants the same child, the matter can only be settled via a Rage in the Cage match, which is a parody of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE)'s Elimination Chamber match.
- In the episode, The Secret Origin of Denzel Crocker, where Timmy goes back in time to discover why Crocker is a mean tempered fairy-obsessed teacher, right before Timmy enters the 1980's, you can see a De Lorean vanishing from in front of the school leaving two trails of fire behind, as in Back to the Future.
- Timmy's hat is pink because Butch Hartman's blue marker ran out of ink. (In the show, they explained it as Timmy's parents expecting a daughter and bought a pink hat for him/her.)
- In the episode Tim-Visible, there is a scene where Cosmo and Wanda are in Spanish class. The phrase that was said before an edit said "Where is the government cheese?" When translated, it was a phrase depleting the Mexican government. It was later changed to "Where is the stinky cheese?", but some associations say that when translated it reads a phrase making fun of Latinos. No actions have been made yet.
- Timmy the Barbarian/No Substitute for Crazy and Fairy Idol were the only two episodes that aired in the United Kingdom before the United States.
- There were changes to the main characters before the series was made. Timmy was originally going to be named after Butch's older brother, Mike, but a fight between them prevented that. Timmy's choice of clothing was originally supposed to be blue, but Butch's blue marker ran dry while designing the character, so he used pink instead. He was also originally intended to have red hair, as he did in the old Oh Yeah! Cartoons, because Butch hated brown, but since Vicky was also a redhead, he reluctantly went with brown so that the enemies' hair didn't match, Cosmo was originally envisioned as a slob, and Wanda's original name was Venus.
- In April 11, 2006, Nickelodeon UK aired all 10 "early/pilot" episodes a.k.a. Oh Yeah! Cartoons shorts in 5 episodes, which includes different voice actors for Timmy and Cosmo, and the faces of Timmy's parents Mr. and Mrs. Turner are kept "hidden/unseen". These stories include Where's the Wand in which Vicky using Wanda's wand, and Too Many Timmys in which Timmy makes copies of himself. Each pilot episode lasts for about 11 minutes, and the drawings were very crude.
- All of the pilot/early episodes are available on YouTube.
- In the episode "Something's Fishy", Wet Willy is a parody of the DC Comics hero AquaMan. The King of Atlantis also says later that the Atlantians eat "Crabs, starfish, and the ocasional underwater squirrel" and coughs up a squirrel tail. This is a direct reference to SpongeBob SquarePants.
- The true title of this series is The Fairly OddParents! but to avoid confusion everywhere else with the first Oh Yeah! short of the series, with the same name, the exclamation point is taken out.
- The "Crimson Chin vs Crash Nebula" special that caused the argument between A.J. and Chester in "Sleep Over and Over" was possibly a spoof on the popular Japanese superhero teamups that always seem to have the word "VS" in the title (e.g Ultraman VS Kamen Rider), although most of the time they never actually fight.
- In one of The Fairly Oddparents TV Movies, Crocker says that he went to New Baltimore Community College, New Baltimore is Butch Hartman's home town.
- Wanda's father, Big Daddy, runs a garbage business, but is always interpreted as a mobster, based off The Godfather.
- Cosmo and Wanda are biologically in their 30s but are actually about 10,000 years old. This means that each 333 years in a Fairy's life is about 1 year biologically.
- The Fairly OddParents are now appearing in a $50 Best Western travel card over the summer [link].
- Originally, the show was called "The Fairy Godparents". Next, Butch decided for "Oh My Godparents". Finally, Bill Burnett, the creator of ChalkZone, recommended the title we know today.
- There was a movie titled The Fairly OddParents Movie planned for 2006, but was replaced by (the final episode of the series). However, according to IMDb, it will be released as a direct-to-video film in 2007.
- Wanda's hair was originally supposed to be blue, but was changed to pink because Timmy's room was blue and her hair would not show up.
- Denzel Crocker's was imodeled after Eugene Levy's character in the Science Fiction movie Splash. Eugene played a scientest who tried to prove that mermaids exsist - like Mr. Crocker with fairies.
- Many Nickelodeon forums have wanted a spoof of "The Jimmy Timmy Power Hour", with a spoof (or parody) with a Jenny Dannny Power Hour which would be a crossover between My Life as a Teenage Robot and Danny Phantom (which was also created by Butch Hartman).

The following have had long-standing or particularly significant influences on the show.
- Dave Thomas, storyboard artist - won the 2004 Annie Award for Storyboarding in an Animated Television Production for the "Pipe Down" episode.
