The Forsaken are a faction of the Undead in the fantasy Warcraft Universe.

Body

In appearance, the Forsaken look no different than their Scourge counterparts. Male or female, they are nothing more than walking intact skeletons with bits of rotting flesh still clinging to the bones. For some Forsaken, their hair continues to grow though it is dirty and disheveled. Many have glowing lights where their eyes should be or the sockets are empty. Either way, the Forsaken can "see" normally. Many dress in whatever clothing they can find but still find value in strong armor and shields as their bodies are not indestructable. Mages and Warlocks wear enchanted cloth using them as would any living magic user. As with all Undead on Azeroth, the Forsaken have a hunchback but are able to stand up straight if they wish to.

The Forsaken have no need to eat, drink, sleep, or even breathe. As an in-game mechanic, they regain mana and hit points by drinking and eating and using their Cannibalize racial ability on humanoid, undead, and NPC corpses. The Forsaken can also remain under water for 300% longer than any of the other player races. The Forsaken speak Orcish and have their own language, given to them by the Plague of Undeath, called Gutterspeak.

History

When the Burning Legion's lieutenant, Kil'Jaeden, discovered that his creation the Lich King was becoming too powerful to control, the demon approached the Betrayer, Illidan Stormrage, and offered him great power in return for destroying the Lich King. Using an artifact called "The Eye of Sargeras," Illidan succeeded in cracking the glacial ice that kept the Lich King imprisoned though he failed to destroy the Lich King due to Maiev Shadowsong's interference as she attempted to capture him. With the Frozen Throne broken, the Lich King's power began to wane and many strong minded Undead regained their free will. Chief amongst them was the former High Elf Ranger General, Sylvanas Windrunner. In control of her own mind and once again having corporeal form, Sylvanas set about to free as many free-willed Undead that she could and eventually enslaved the Dreadlord Varimathras as well. Naming her new army the Forsaken, Sylvanas claimed the ruined capital of Lordearon as her own and has turned the royal crypts beneath the crumbling castle into a bastion of evil and Undeath called Undercity. The Forsaken refer to Sylvanas as The Dark Lady and loyally obey her every command.

Forsaken lands

The Forsaken have no lands of their own. Though they control a great deal of the Tirisfal Glades where Undercity is located, they are hampered not only by the Scourge but a human resistance force called the Scarlet Crusade. The Crusade wishes to destroy all of the Undead be they Scourge or Forsaken and their fight is never ending. The Forsaken have near total sway of the neighboring Silverpine Forest but find resistance there as well in the form of Dalaran wizards and the Necromancer, Arugal.

The Forsaken's place in Azeroth

Having no necromancers in her flock, Sylvanas has found it difficult to increase the Forsaken's numbers. She gladly welcomes any free willed Undead and is keen on inviting Undead mages and warlocks to join the Forsaken. Sylvanas's main goal is to take revenge upon Arthas and free as many Undead as she can. Second to that is to defeat all of the Forsaken's enemies and to wipe the living from the face of Azeroth. To achieve this, Sylvanas formed the Royal Apothecary Society and placed an Undead Forsaken named Farranel in charge as Master Apothecary. Farranel and his assistants work to create a new plague, one that will wipe out not only the living but the Undead Scourge as well. The Society knows more about toxins and poisons than anyone on Azeroth and strive to create newer and stronger versions. The dreadlord, Varimathras, still serves the Forsaken Queen. Varimathras is the Dark Lady's majordomo and the security of Undercity is his responsibility.

Feeling that perhaps the primitive races of Azeroth could help her, Sylvanas entered into an alliance of conveinence with the Horde though she has no true loyalty to them. The Warchief Thrall agreed to the pact knowing how the Forsaken must feel having been enslaved by the Lich King just as the orcs were bound to the Burning Legion. Cairne Bloodhoof, leader of the Tauren, decided that even the Forsaken were worthy of a second chance. However, neither Thrall nor Cairne fully trust Sylvanas and with the continued research by the Royal Apothecary Society, their concerns are well founded.
